The first one to take me down

LL Intermediate game this afternoon... We're in the last inning due to the time limit. Foul ball comes back, nicks my chest protector, and then goes straight into my collarbone and neck.

 

I went down to my knees stunned (which is a first), and both coaches plus a team mom (who happens to live two doors down from me) came out to help me... It took the wind out of me, and I was coughing. It took about ten seconds for me to gather myself, but once I had I told them I was ready to go... I got three "NONONONO!" from the coaches and mom, one of whom told me not to "be a Macho Man".

 

They got me some water, and I was ready to go about a minute later. I've still got ice on it now, but it'll be purple for a while... I'm just counting my blessings it caught my protector, because I'd DEFINITELY be in the same boat as Fielden Culbreth if not.

 

The mom who lives two homes down got home before me, and told my mom what had happened. She started the story with, "I don't know if he'll tell you, but..." and my mom said "Oh he'll tell me. He's so dramatic I'm surprised he didn't call 911."

Does sound like it may be low but no what CP or mask combo the neck is vulnerable. If you get hit directly in the  artery you can get a flash knockout. They are quick, may not even realize you went out.

Postgame, a parent asked if I was ok, and when I said yes, he jokingly told he had his knife all ready for a trach pipe... I laughed, and he said "I could still put it in now if you want!"... I told him that I'd pass for now, but maybe next game.

For anybody familiar with Walter Reed Army Hospital, this is where amputees go for treatment. I used to do USO shows there a couple of times a year. One of my hands was setting up a followspot and it dropped and caught her hand pretty good. She went to the promoter for ice, the promoter asked if she wanted a Dr to look at it, the problem is they would want to amputate. She passed.

Sounds like you get to see these people "behind the scenes" which has to be quite interesting.  I imagine the time spent with the guys injured in Iraq was intense.

Exactly. And it's not like the extra ounce or so is going to do anything bad to me... I have an All Star Superlight Titanium mask... The extra throat protector probably makes it weight just over a pound. Maybe. Well worth it.

I played goal in hockey for more years than I care to remember and for about the last 10 years or so I wore a lexan throat protector as shown below. It save me numerous times from serious injury. It did not limit my movement and the added weight was not a factor. As soon as my new HSM comes in I plan on adding one to it.
