I played goal in hockey for more years than I care to remember and for about the last 10 years or so I wore a lexan throat protector as shown below. It save me numerous times from serious injury. It did not limit my movement and the added weight was not a factor. As soon as my new HSM comes in I plan on adding one to it.

Lucky. Nearest umpiring store to me is the Honig's main warehouse in Ann Arbor that's about an hour drive. It's nice when I need something NOW for a weekend tournament, but I just buy from UA any other time.
