Here's an interesting one which I would like to see everyone's take on.

 

R2 & R3, less than 2 outs. Suicide Squeeze up the first base line, both runners on the move. How do you position yourself as HP to get the fair/foul, but also see the touch at 3rd from R2. We have a team notorious for this play and I've found a way to see it, but how would you handle it yourself?

1BLX or take it from directly behind the plate.  Fair/foul is your primary responsibility here followed by the potential play at home.  R2 and a touch of 3B is way down the list of stuff to worry about here..

A lot to see on this play, but Mike's right, you have to prioritize. Get the F/F first, since nothing will matter if the ball is hit foul. If you read an obviously fair ball (slowing down 4 feet inside the line, you could swing around to the POP to prepare for the play at the plate and give yourself a little glance up the 3BL for R2's touch.

 

If the ball is rolling down the line, do the best you can from 1BLX.

Are you saying the team runs a play where they attempt to score both R3 and R2 on a squeeze play?? I don't know if I've ever seen that happen.

I guess if they do run a play like that:

No one in either dugout is watching R2 touch 3rd. They are watching the batted ball and potential play at the plate. Follow their lead.

We watch touches for potential appeals. There won't be an appeal at 3rd.

I just can't imagine trying to score a run from 2nd on an infield bunt.

If the team is "notorious" for running it, then maybe the BU can help on the touch at third - or at least make sure the runner doesn't cut the corner.

we had a team for years that was notorious for running this play, and the runner from 2nd would cut 3rd by a mile....figuring the HPU would either not glance over or be straightlined to third and not be able to see how far that he had cut 3rd.....

Why would you need to see the touch at third? Isn't that your partner's responsibility? :D

Please enlighten us on how you have found a way to see it.

 

As others have noted that touch at 3rd is down the list and may only get a quick glance depending on what is happening out in front, I think I'm really only looking to make sure R2 doesn't cut the corner.  In a third world scenario I can see R2 trying to make a run at HP IF somebody decides to give up on R3 at the plate, and maybe go to 1st to get the out.  Even then it's a real long shot IMHO.

Played and coached ball for 25 years (first year umpire) and we had a designed play like that. R2 was to cut 3rd base. It worked almost all the time. I wondered about this.

I get between POP and 1BLE and set my self at an angle to where I can see 3rd base out of the corner of my eye instead of square to 1BL and the moment I see the ball is fair I look at 3rd, and its typically about the time R2 is going through or coming out of the grass back onto the base path between 3B and HP.

 

Every team in that district knows that he is notorious for it, so we have to be ready for the appeal.

 

It's a dirty play. I had a senior (and I mean old as well) official tell me he almost dumped the assistant coach for telling him that they intentionally do this cause he felt its not teaching good sportsmanship which is a little extreme for me, but UIL does say the field is an extension of the classroom.
