  1. Very good post Treydawgmt. In Canada, chances of being audited for umpiring is slim since most of the organization don't file T-4's (employment income) or report money given to self-employed individuals. The province of Quebec tried to get information from these organizations for audit purposes but people were outraged; everybody seems to think that only 14 or 15 years old are getting paid to umpire/referee. I know someone that did over 400 hockey games (at 25$ a pop) and he will not pay taxes on it... But as per tax laws, all income should be reported.
  2. Sorry to bust your bubble but all income as to be reported in Canada... Not what I was told. Let's just say that you should trust me on that one...
  3. Sorry to bust your bubble but all income as to be reported in Canada...
  4. So you told the UIC to get ride of him because he didn't have the experience. And then you say that he would be fine with more experience? How he's he going to get that experience if you fire him?
  5. IX3 with team wendy's. It's what I'm wearing. Light but the pads give you a lot more protection. Do not buy the ix3 and keep the stock pads, you will get killed...
  6. Thanks for the input. I'll order the one on Ump-Attire. Might try your advice tiger49 if that doesn't work.
  7. Hi guys, I'm thinking about wearing a mouthiece for the upcoming season (still -10 celsius or 14 farenheit in Canada, I hate winter). I was wondering if any one here was using one? I'm worried about not being able to speak clearly. Any recommendations for brand? Thanks.
  8. Thanks for all the feedback. We have a roster of around 25-30 umpires to cover 34 teams separated in 4 levels of play. The way we have it setup right now, the assignor reports to the league. I don't have assignment experience but I really think it's something I can do. I'm a fairly organized person and I'm a quick learner. Our structure also has a Head Umpire and Deputy Head umpire which I have a great relationship with. I won't have to pay the umpires, only distribute the money 3 times a year. Beside making sure that everyone is happy, is your assignor doing anything else? Is he involved in training and stuff like that?
  9. Hi guys, My men's league has an opening for a new assignor and I have decided to apply. Being in Canada, things are done differently then in the US I'm sure. Last year, our assignor only assigned games. Not a lot of communication with him beside that. We used a software to enter our availabilities and then he assigned the games. I wonder what your assignors are doing? Since I don't have any experience as assignor, anything you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  10. I agree that the sleeves on the Smitty are too short...
  11. As per this board and personal experience, nothing good will come in engaging a player over balls and strikes, specially at this level. I think a good warning should be enough. If he continues, he's gone. Having little experience, I've been in a situation a bit like that one before and ejected the player. Next time, I'll warn first. The result will probably be the same but at least I will be able to say that I tried
  12. I agree that if the comment is directed at me, than he's gone. I think I read somewhere here that the one of the easiest trigger word in an ejection is "you". As soon as a player/manager says it, he has one foot in the parking lot... I think a stern warning would have been more appropriate. If I would eject players evertime they swear, filling reports would be my full-time job!
  13. Thanks a lot for your comments BigUmp56 and Matt. Very helpful.
  14. We don't have much baseball here in Canada. It's mostly one season (May until September) for all levels... I wish I could umpire all year long!
  15. Thanks for the comments. Since it wasn't personal, I agree that I might have jumped the gun a bit....Being a first year umpire after over 20 years as a player, I know realize that game management is the hardest part of umpiring by far. All I can say is that I am learning a lot
