Well bjump, apparently we are a bunch of baseball umpire traditionalists on this site. Sorry your idea was picked apart, if you had posted it on any other day than April Fool's day perhaps the discussion would have been more constructive.

First, thank you for your service to our country.

I hate to say it but you've brought most of the negative responses on yourself. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think anyone is opposed to new products and concepts but several things you've discussed on this topic doesn't help your cause. You say removing ball bags is difficult. I asked how so. It's a pretty simple 5 second process of undoing your belt and taking it off while catching the ball bags when they come off the belt. You say you carry a brush to clean the bases, around the bases, and pitchers plate. Baseball umpires don't (or shouldn't) do that. God invented feet for this if you find it necessary to clean. You say you've created an indicator with a lanyard on it. Why? God invented a left hand to hold an indicator.

There's a guy who invented a mask hook. Maybe there's a market for it but I can't imagine it being very large. Most umpires think it's a pretty stupid product.

The umpiring wheel has been invented. Most umpires prefer traditional products. Anything new had better be really good.

You're taking crap because you chose to post this on April Fools Day. I have to admit I was pretty hesitant to even reply because I thought it was a joke.

If you can make a better mouse trap that will sell, God bless you. But these guys are your potential customers and you've seen their responses.

Sorry I was taught to clean bases AND never with my foot.

I dont wnat to sell anything.

I don't see your idea as an improvement on my current ball bags. I use the Ump-Attire XL Ultimate ball bags. They are large, waterproof, DO have the pockets for brush, pen, indicator that I DO use, and also have a zipper pocket on the reverse side for personal items such as keys.

I don't wear clip-on ties, and wouldn't wear a clip-on ball bag. Aside from the rest of the thread, this is my open and honest feedback on your product idea. You may do with it what you wish.

To add to it, you sound like the kind of person who thinks outside the box.
Get your pencil out, and draw up the concept. Get it patented for proprietary security and good luck.

I have Dry-lo bags with out pockets.

They are designed to keep YOU dry NOT damp balls.

Embrace the concept!

Honestly I'm having a tough time where someone treated you poorly? In your earlier post you call Jocko to task, but I can't find where he was so disparaging or rough on you. In fact I would say I was worse, and I for one can say that most of my response was intended to be tounge in cheek since I really thought you were pulling our leg with it being April Fools. Most of the comments made were because of the fact that the things you speak of happen on a softball field, not a baseball diamond. As MidAm pointed out to you most of these things are just things most of us just don't do, and would never be trained to do.

I have been on many of the other umpiring web sites, and believe me when I tell you, if you want rough treatment you can head on over to a few of them cause they can be down right rough. We're really not interested in tearing you down, but there are somethings we just will find funny for whatever reason, and most of the time it's because one of us has stepped in that same bucket of sh!t ourselves.

If I offended you in some manner that was not my intent. And if you find the opportunity to bust my ass about something because I've been a bonehead, then I would expect you to do so, and I promise not to get my feelings to hurt. You can learn an immense amount of umpiring knowledge here, it's yours for the taking.

Your service to our country, and to my family's well being and protection is greatly appreciated.

I think this forum is not for me.

Seems like most the responders are snipers waiting for a chance to shoot and hide.

I spent too much time dealing with people like that over the past few years.

With Jocko being named the member of the month it only reinforces my feelings.

I will not recomend to the 4 young umps, HS seniors, to join this forum. Could run them out umpiring.

I am trying to get 2 of them to Wendelstat or the new Umpire school.

Trust me on this though, you don't know rough, I do.

And now we know. Softball. :Seriously, I don't wear combo pants, so I always change pants when I change positions. Also, wet baseballs go to the dugout, not my bag. I get extras from HT when needed, so if they get wet/muddy/scuffed/etc they disappear and I get replacements. I use the inside pocket for my indicator, brush goes in my back pocket. Pencil/card in shirt pocket.I use UA Ultimate bags

Let's see.... Nope. Nothing here. Except the fact that I pointed out you're obviously a SB 'ump'

Finally, one intended for you. Let's see.... An honest question. Nothing rude or obnoxious here. I can't imagine a HP 'ump' wearing an indicator around his neck, so figured this was intended for base 'umps' and since BB umpires don't generally carry them on the bases, it just seemed to coincide with the SB 'umps'

Frankly, I don't like your idea but I like your innovative mind. Please do not be discouraged by the responses you received here, in my humble opinion, you simply baited yourself into most of the participants here not giving your idea merit due to the SB references.

I personally would like to see more innovative protective products for us umpires and I certainly think you are up to the challenge.

As far as your mentee's go, it is always a good idea to receive the most information possible, this is especially true for this profession, it would be a shame to deprive them of all the ideas, theories, and knowledge that is shared around this forum.

I truly do appreciate those who think outside the box even though it may contradict popular tradition. :notworthy:

Yes MidAmUmp I clean the rubber and bases between innings.

I want to see if the pitcher in in contact with the rubber.

I clean bases and the approaches to them to keep dirt from building up so that I can distinguish when the foot or hand arrives NOT a combination of dirt and a hand or foot.

Yes I wear combo pants.

Turn around between our game is fast.

I asked a simple question about a ball bag and some of you guys want to make this into something it is not.

I did not attack anyone and would not do so in a forum.

Don't clean the bases. It's only eliminating clues that could tell you if the next runner by touched the base.
