Whenever I have a game where you get paid at the game.... It's ALWAYS before the game. 

Actually, I like asking the HM before the plate meeting so there isn't $$ changing hands at the plate in front of the parents..... It just looks funny IMHO.

Have been doing travel for six years (roughly 125-150 per year).  Have never once had a problem getting paid by the team that lost.

The only times I haven't gotten paid for a game before it started when cash is due is 2 cases:

1) It is questionable if we will get both ends of a doubleheader in (they will pay one game immediately and in between games when we are sure we will get #2 started, they will pay up)

2) Coach forgot his wallet/cash (and may have his wife go home or take a collection of his parents, usually though have your money by the 3rd inning).

Our men's league used to problematic when it came to pay. Now the teams give us a block of games and the assigner pays us in cash before the game. I have seen youth teams taking a collection before games. My Weds HS game didn't pay us, new AD and he is an idiot.

All our contracts insist on payment prior to the game.....that being said, it doesnt always happen that way...but all in all, I've mostly gotten paid one way or another.... but a few things have happended along the way...

 

• Summer Rec-Go to concession stand after the game to get paid......unfortunately it was a bad night for hotdogs.....so we only got partial payment...still waiting on the extra $5...paid my BU the full due and Im still out $10. 
• HS Varsity- coach told us checks didnt come, even though we saw the AD give him our checks, because he was upset over a couple of my partners calls......blocked that school in arbiter....eventually got paid, but coach asks now why he doesnt get the better umpires.....
• Summer College Prospect League- If coach wins, you get paid immediately, if he loses he wants to wait unil after he "talks to his team"......
• Numerous "show up" fees never collected........games cancelled, yet no one calls off Umpires....we get to game site, no teams.....no one there to pay us travel fees....

Done a few scrimmages where Coaches try to collect money from parents during the game. Never had a problem. Sometimes I even get a bit extra!

Forgot about the summer league, go to the concession stand to get paid, problem. Usually not a problem but one league tends to close after the 60ft games. We usually do doubles and go to the stand between games, but if we go long they will close on you. I made it clear that they need to make an effort to take care of us.

I've never been paid on-site for a high school game.  The checks are mailed to us.

 

As far as travel ball goes, some teams pay ahead of time and some don't.  I'm never going to walk up during the pre-game and demand to be paid, because I think it could cause problems.before the game even starts. 

 

Now I have had coaches who have pulled the "let me talk to my team first" bit and I won't have any of that.  Plus, during June or July I don't really want to be paid up front because I don't want to maybe have it fall out of my pocket or get wet inside of my pocket.

 

Like I said, I've probably done 700-800 travel games and I've NEVER had a problem as far as getting paid is concerned.

When I did HS ball in NC we were paid every 2 weeks through the assignor.  There were a few exceptions where the school would pay you directly but this was in the form of a check mailed to you.  Never had an issue.

 

Our local assn. for rec ball and middle school works in a similar way, our assignor pays us every 2 weeks during the season.  Been this way since I started with this group 4 years ago and I've never had an issue.

 

The only games I do on a regular basis where I get cash on the spot are local tournaments and I am always paid by the Tournament Director, usually at the end of the weekend.  Most of the time the money comes from the gate and concessions, so I get a couple hundred dollars in bills no larger than $10.  Again, have never had a problem with this.

We have one county that their schools give us a check on the field, private schools give us a check, all others we get paid through the assoc.
