Hey guys, new to your forum, and I am looking to switch equipment this year, umping mostly fastpitch 10U to 15U and probably some HS level. I am looking between the Wilson Charcoal or wilson Davis on the CP, and leg guards between Wilson Pro platnium and Wilson Davis, both would be the 15 1/2" size. Comments and questions welcomed, Thanks.

I have used the charcoal for several years and find it more confortable and better fitting that my gold...i have no dount that the gold protects better at the higher level, but up to varsity age, i have taken many shots to the chest and shoulders on my charcoal and feel 100 percent protected

Thanks th3, is there less material in the Charcoal vs the Gold?

i believe the main padding is a bit thinner in the charcoal and the gold has add'l pads on the sides, that kind of wrap around the sides of your ribs..everyone says the gold is more protective and i would not argue with that...the charcoal is recommended up to HS varsity and they use the gold in MLB (although someone posted here that there are 1 or 2 that use the charcoal in MLB)...i get hit in the shoulders a lot and i think the charcoal protection is excellent there

Either you're a tall mofo or you're standing too high.

Edited to add: you might want to back up 3/4 step as well

I love my Wilson Platinum CP and have the matching Leg Guards...All my gear is Wilson, and I really like it.....The Leg Guards are comfortable, don't feel a thing when hit...My vote...Get the best equipment you can afford and I have been happy with Wilson.

Thanks Scott, do you have any fit problems with Platnium? I'm in Nashville and no one here has any of the Wilson's in stock. I hate to order not knowing if I can get proper rib coverage. When I measure according to info form UA, I feel like the bottom few  ribs would be exposed.

That's normal with the Wilson, a little bit of exposure of the lower ribs.

Thanks BT Blue, I think that I will  chose between the charcoal, platnium, and gold. No one in Nashville stocks any of these, I may have to take a vacation day this week and do a 2hr road trip to Louisville to UA and see which one fits the best.

You never will regret buying the best. If the extra cost is not an issue I would say buy a gold or platinum. If cost is a decider, go with the charcoal.

If one wants "the best" and cost is no issue, one must consider the Unequal CP. Many people on here will hate what I am about to say- IMO, you should NOT buy the wilson gear. Ask anyone who paid $50 or less for their Champion CP, they will swear by it. The only difference is the Champion doesn't come with the unsightly yellow "W". I paid more for my CP, but I got something different (better) than the typical foam and plastic. So if you ask me, if you buy Wilson, you are simply paying for MLB guys to get free gear. Sorry, Joe.

I  went for broke today and ordered the Wilson Platnium CP, pro platnium leg guards, and a new Dyna -Lite Mask. Going to donate the two year old soft shell and mask to any of our new assoc umps that may want it.

Epic Sports had the best price on the Platnium CP at 122.00, but no inventory for a while. I bought them thru www.cheapbats.com . Total was just under 250 with free shipping from Cali to Tennessee.

No problems at all.....is very comfortable, just took a foul tip straight back Saturday during a Varsity game, pitcher throwing high 80's...didn't feel a thing.

Glad to hear a good review on the Shock FX. I'll have to wait until next year before I purchase one.
