Maybe, right at :05, and 1:11 it looks like the PU is throwing out both arms like a safe call to the BU (doesn't look it to me). The first base umpire sees this and thinks maybe he is signaling foul for some reason without raising his hands totally over his head. He then just gives a delayed safe signal and starts pointing towards home and then gets with the PU to find out what signal he was giving.

Maybe the plate umpire should have pointed fair for a couple pumps first and then a safe sign if he did not have any interferences or the ball touching the runner. That way the BU would know it was just a fair ball. You mechanics guys can help out on this for when you want to give 2 signals on a call that potential needs 2 signals to be made.

Not good, but at least the HP umpire did not invoke the new mechanic being talked about, where any umpire who is 110% sure his partner misses an obvious call on an unnatural type play like this (usually just swipe tag plays and pulled foot plays), just overrules his partner immediately with no huddle. That way the appeal request is already taken care of and you just go argue like it was a bang/bang play at first. Maybe the plate umpire left his arms out too long or gave a safe signal for no interference on the runner right at first base (we cannot see PU anymore after 1:11) and the BU thought he was invoking the new rule of immediately over-ruling due to a pulled foot since 1B came off pretty darn quick.

This new mechanic was first invoked in an Atlanta Braves game, but I do not know much about it, other than just by surfing around and seeing it mentioned here and there, without really understanding it. Those in the know with those hotlines to the Bigs can help out here.

They got the call right. That's what's most important.

No, looking like you belong at that level is the most important.

I think that by getting the call right they show just that.

Which U1 were you watching in the game?

I was watching the umpire who was willing to get help and get the call right.

You watched an umpire who looked like he did not know what to do. He needed the others to explain to him what was going on out there.

Yes but then instead of eating a bad call he made it right. I'm not saying he did everything by the book (he didn't) all I'm saying is that in the end the proper call was made.

A bad call? He didn't even know what the call was.

I know he didn't know what the PUs call was but he did call the runner safe.

Im not sure he called him safe. He kinda just raised his arms.

Pause it at :08

No. Not a safe signal. At :08 looks like a safe signal. But watch from :00 to :08. The whole sequence show him just raising his arms.

He looked to see if the PU was calling an interference, he didn't so he safed him.

He kinda did. He was unsure. Just raising the arms like he did like he was going to fly away is not a mechanic I try to use. I like a more crisper mechanic. Mr Young is making sound like U1 called a solid no doubt safe call.

I never said it was a solid crisp mechanic, just that it was a mechanic nonetheless.

We are all really speculating on something that none of us really know what happened.

I will give U1 a call later and ask him.
