No SH*#. Are you suggesting to stay there and take one when the catcher choose to "olay" an 87mph pitch as opposed to block it for you when it's going to bounce 5 feet in front of the plate directly in front of you? Even more reason to bail in that situation if there's runners on.

Yes they say staying put will get you hurt less. Well it is easier said than done. I've gotten happy feet for no apparent reason in much lesser games.

Yes.... Easier said than done!! However, look at his position before the pitch and as he took the shot (Sorry, I don't have the cool video editing capability) and IF he could have stayed put it appears the ball would have hit his Chest Protector...

That said, like Warren put it: We all have flinched for much less.

I kept preaching to my young umpires to stay and take the hit so you get the call correct. One night I had three or four behind the screen watching me on the plate. I took a shot square in the chest. They all in unison said,"Stay there and take the hit!" I told them I did and got wacked.

I've flinched before and taken one off the gut that left a bruise. It should have hit my CP.

I've stayed put before and taken a bouncer square off the cup that brought me to a knee. A small hop by me would have made it miss me completely.

I don't care what you do, eventually the ball is going to find you.

I am proud to say though that thanks to my elders in umping, I never flinch at a high ball... The only thing that can come out of flinching high is a ball to the side of the head or a ball to the neck - both of which I would rather never experience.

Other injuries over the years, they are on the first couple pages. Then it gives all suspended games (probably darkness). Then at the end you have umpires out for various reasons in the good old days.

Seems like Ed Vargo worked with a broken little finger and was wearing a splint. Maybe Jerry Layne worked with a casted broken wrist, or maybe it was Mark Johnson.
