Is this smitty?

It's starting to get a little chilly at night here in Jacksonville, and while I haven't had to break out my jacket yet, I'm sure that's around the corner. It's the black Smitty with the adjustable bottom and white shoulder stripes. Not everyone (or even most people) in my association have a black jacket or even a black shirt. I've seen on a few occasions in the big leagues the plate guy wearing his powder shirt and the base guys all in their black jackets. Can I get away with something like that with a two man crew? What about the plate guy in navy (navy and powder are the only colors everyone has to have)?

And I'm assuming that if he's in a navy jacket, there's no way I can wear my black:shakehead:.

only a smitty wears a differnt color jacket than his partners jacket--but a umpire who is doing the plate can wear a short sleeve light blue shirt and the field ump wear a navy jacket light blue and navy match---black matches with cream and light blue as long as the trim on the light blue is black. ------ Remember when we were younger and did not care what we wore :bang:

Let's be clear: The shirt that accompanies a black jacket in the bigs is not "powder," but rather "polo blue" or "MLB blue" or "pro blue." And it only accompanies this type of black jacket with the polo blue stripe:

The straight black with white stripes matches only the black shirt. And, when the PU wears long sleeves, the BU(s) wear jackets. If everyone wears a jacket, they match exactly.

Always remember that only umpires care about what umpires wear. Fans, players and coaches couldn't care less. As long as you don't look like a hobo, and make the expected calls, it's all good to them.

True, you don't want to look like a hobo, but you should also at least make an attempt at looking like you know what you're doing.

Mixing navy blue and black? no!

If all you have is a black & white jacket and your partner's in a polo blue shirt with black collar, that's not too bad a match, but like Finnerty says, it's better done with what actually goes together.

I really like those jackets.

I'd like them even more if they didn't have a baby blue stripe on them. (How did that become acceptable?)

The +POS jacket, with the charcoal gray stripe is so much more classy looking. That gray exactly matches the poly wool slacks.

If PU is wearing the normal softball style powder blue (W/N trim) then you should wear the navy jacket with the true powder trim. If he is wearing the navy shirt, you should wear the navy jacket with red and white inserts. If he is wearing a black shirt, I think you can wear any color of black jacket (gray, white, polo blue inserts"). < My two cents.

There are now four options concerning the black with polo blue/powder blue inserts:

Majestic < Umpire coat

Smitty < Jacket. I'm not sure if it's a polo blue or powder blue.

BTL Officials Gear < Jacket. Once again, not sure if it's polo or powder.

Honigs < Jacket, def polo blue.
