Great Call by Davis!

With all the complaining about all of the bad calls by the umpires this post-season, I thought it would be nice to look at the great call made by Gerry Davis in Game 1 of the ALCS:

It was a great call.

It is also a great example of how to handle a passed ball with a runner coming in from 3rd. You can't always get the ideal angle. I don't think anyone would argue that 1BLX is ideal for this play. But with the ball and the catcher going to Davis's right had he tried to get 3BLX ge could have potentially been in the way of the throw from Posada or not have been set for the play.

Great call.

BTW has anybody ever seen CC move that "fast" before???

Only one angle shows he got the call right.

Announcer all over it until the other rings in with, there is a replay that shows he was out....

He's listed at 6' 7" and 290, but very athletic. He's been a favorite of mine since his early days in Cleveland. Davis looks so calm - with Cruz and Sabathia barreling down on me like that, I would be crapping jackrocks!:rollinglaugh:

He was refering to how Gerry Davis could see it from his angle. It appears the runner is between him and CC's glove. While he was right, did he actually see it or did he judge it based on proximity and how far up the line it was?

No one knows but him. The bad part about it is it is one of those plays where he had no where else to go. He doesn't want to go right. Ball came back quickly and he may have been in the way. 1BLX is not ideal at all but it was the only place he could logically and safely be out of the way.

He did the best he could for positioning. Whether he actually saw it, well, that is a different story.

But this is where 20+ years of experience and umpiring prowess pay off.

I also liked the timing and nonchalant out call. "Oh yeah, another day at the office and you're out too."

I think he meant "low to the ground." In his opinion, kneeling places you more at risk of being blocked than does standing.

noumpere is correct. By low I ment to the ground. Kneeling just appears that in this situation to not give as good an angle.

But I love the reserved, yet powerful calls like this and what McClelland does.

Sometimes, a hard sell tells the teams that you weren't really sure. A quiet, confident call tells them, "Clearly an out. Not even close."

With experience, you'll use both types of calls (not on the same play, of course!)

I liked that call too. I liked the timing, I liked the punch out. Like noumpere a quiet calm call can be beautiful.
