I am up grading some equipment with my Fall Ball Money :HS

I already ordered a Wilson West Vest Gold from Ump-Attire :wow:

Now I am considering ordering a Shock FX 2.0 Titanium.

Do not know anyone who even has a helmet to try.

My reason for possibly trying it:

Did receive a mild concussion this year from a mask shot.

A few fields have those over handing back stops that can cause fouls to come right back down on you. Been hit oh shoulders a couple of times but not my head yet. Knock on wood!!!!!!

Never used a helmet so need some input here.

One concern is I have about a 6 7/8 head and it says for size 7 and up.

I have read the reviews etc that have already been posted.

Just need a lil more nudge before I spend the money....lol

Thanks in advance for all your input.

Check out all the All-Star bucket reviews before looking at the Shock. Remember, Hickox took a shot w/ a Shock, now he wears an All-Star ....Ask Brad for recommendations ...he'll probably come on here with all the goods! :blah

I have worn both the Shock F/X 2.0 and the All-Star MVP4000.

They are both great helmets, but imo the All-Star is far superior (with or w/o the TI cage). The moisture wicking padding is great It absorbs sweat like no other helmet I have ever worn. I also love the way it sits on your head.

I think the All-Star and the Wilson are both rated as being for a size 7 on the bottom end. Both offer youth versions that might be sized differently. My head is a 71/2 and I know that the straps on the all-star are adjusted just about as loose as they can go.

I took a hit flush to the center of the cage on my all-star a couple of weeks ago and I "felt" it less than direct hits on my Shock.

Both helmets are great. I am glad that I now wear an All-Star. The wilson was the best until All-Star upgraded. Glad that I was able to get just about what I paid for my shock on Ebay when I sold it this summer.

Don't. After this fall, I am done with Wilson headgear until they get their act together. I have the Shock FX Steel version. The pads are falling off and the cage is bent. This is the second cage that has bent on me. My dad has the titanium version and his pads are falling off and the titanium cage is bent in a couple of places. Add that to a flawed strap design that takes off your ear lobes and an awkward fitting throat guard, and you have a seriously flawed helmet. See pictures below.

If you are going to drop $200+ on an HSM go with the All-Star system 7, the Pro 9 HSM or something other than a Wilson.

On another note, Wilson promptly replaced both helmets and the customer service is great. I would have preferred a great design to not need replacing in the first place. When high school ball gets started next year, I'll be in an All-Star.

The forehead padding on the new All Star is FAR superiour to that on the Wilson helmet. And the WV pads on my traditional frames are better that both.

Fit is critical for whatever you wear. You want to spread out the shock as far as possible. I've found that helmets contact my jaw nicely, with that big, soft pillow, but not my forehead (where my brain is). I've never felt really safe with a helmet, but the new All Star design in pretty close.

I had the same issue with the padding falling off on my Shock. Wilson replaced it quickly and easily, but it was still a bother.

Now I have padding that can be removed and washed...plus an extra set for days where I work two games back to back on hot days...Thank you all-star.

KCFan-- Do you ever wash/clean your helmet...it looks incredibly dirty...kind of like a catchers helmet that is always being thrown on the ground.

I have the wilson Shock and my pads a coming loose too. I have used 2 sided velcro to hold them in place. Any info on where to send it to would be appreciated. THANKS

I see Lesters Sports Upstate has the new All Star titanium helmet for sale. Anyone else selling it at any better price??

The model that Lester's shows on the website IS NOT the new All-Star model. The new model is the MVP4000TI. However, if you call them they will probably order one for you. Ask for Dave Prong.

That's not my mask, it's my dad's. I believe he kept it in the garage during the summer/fall gap and in his car during the summer. I kept mine in my Wilson bag with the special lining in the compartment.

Include a photo or two as well as your proof of purchase. You'll get one in a few days. Like I said, Wilson replaced all of them.

I'm still going with the All-Star, I'm just wondering if spending money on the Titanium cage and polycarb. shell is worth it?

So if you get it on eBay or from an Ump that's is no longer using it then fix it yourself?

You also have the option of the MVP4000SL, which features the polycarb shell with the Super light Steel cage. The weight difference is a mere 2 oz, and, while the TI cage bars are thinner... the SL can work quite nicely.

Well, that might explain why the pads are falling out.

Think about how hot it gets inside a car during the summer.... :givebeer:

I have an original Wilson Shock and it's used exclusively from spring through fall since 2008 - but it's well cared for - and it's never had any of the problems I've seen discussed here.

Wilson's customer service is second to none - my original cage was bent by a full-on pitch, and within 3 days, I had a new cage from Wilson on my doorstep.

Except for some darkening on the chin pad (from perspiration) mine still looks new.

I agree with Brian. I've used a Wilson for two yrs now - high school, legion, college - and I've not had any trouble. I take care of my stuff, and I haven't had any pads come loose.

I got itchy last spring and pulled out my conventional mask for a couple of games, but I got hit and realized I like the helmet.

As far as the sizing, I wear a 6 7/8 and the Wilson fits fine, even though it says 7+.

I'm interested in buying a new All-Star. I like what I read on here. The biggest hangup I've had so far is the design of the bars, and I realize that's not much. I think the old design was classic, and it will take me a little time to get used to the new look.

I also took care of my helmet. Never left it in the car. Always hung it up after using. I wore a cap underneath all the time so there wasn't a sweating problem. Still wear it and would not switch. It's a great helmet. Great vision and not hot at all.

Thanks for all the input both here in in private messages.

After weighing all the factors I have ordered a

All Star MVP2500 System 7 from Lesters.

Think it will be just fine for my needs and will be a good first HSM.

I can give it a good try out with fall ball and my adult league work and see if a HSM is truly for me.

I even advised Ump-Attire I was going that way and was going to have to order from someone else since they did not stock it.

I was then told that Jim has decided to start stocking that mask and they will have them in around December.

After I get some games in under it I will post a review.

Thanks to all my brothers for your assistance and advice. :banghead:

I took great care of my shock...and I still had a pad fall of the back after one year of use. Not a big deal and Wilson customer service was great.

But so is All-Star's

I have had my Shock FX Titanium for 2.5 seasons now. The padding is not coming out, but the cool max fabric is starting to peel away a little bit. I'm ok with that, due to all the use it has had. I expect wear and tear over the years, and figure if I can get almost 3 seasons out of a bucket, that's pretty good, since a "season" for me starts the first week of March and runs through October, with a minimum 100 plate games.

The problem I have had is with the cages. My first titanium cage got bent within a few months. Wilson was great, and sent me a replacement right away. Early the next season, my cage got bent again, on a fairly harmless foul ball that got me. Wilson sent me another cage. A few months later, I got hit again, and was left with another bent cage.

At this point, I was out of warranty, but to Wilson's credit, they sent me a steel replacement, free of charge. I give Scott at Wilson a lot of credit, he is great to deal with. Now, during fall ball, I take another shot, and now my steel cage is bent.

I love the helmet. It's very comfortable, and I don't have an issue with the straps. I actually love everything about it, but have about had it with the bent cages. I take maybe a few shots off the mask a year, and I don't want to have to replace my cage every time it happens. It may be time to switch to the All Star and see how those hold up.

I point you to this post of mine: http://umpire-empire.com/forum/showpost.php?p=38338&postcount=19

I still think it's the case.
