Summer varsity baseball. B2 BR hits slow roller to F6 who throws to F3. BR beats throw by half a step. Next batter lays down a bunt and beats it out. Now have R1 and R2 on with nobody out. Batter lays down another bunt that F1 fields and tries to get R2 at 3rd, but throws high making F5 have to jump to get the ball. F5 comes down just after R2 slides in.

Coach comes out of the dugout yelling that's 2 this inning that you missed. I throw up the stop sign and tell him thats enough. He then says that's 2 you missed and I tossed him.

He then goes into a tirade on how I will never work on his field again. I said that's fine. He leaves the field and we play on.

I get done with the game and there is a message from my assigner that the coach called and that the next 2 DH's I am supposed to have on that field later this week, I have been pulled from. Said since it's summer ball the coach has the right to tell the assigner who he wants and doesn't want.

I am Pretty Pist right now, but unfortunately this assigner is the only gig in town.

So since it's summer ball coaches have free reign to be jack wagons?

If I was your assigner I would send the worst smitty umpire I had to work his games for rest of the summer. But really, if he is the only game in town then he should tell the coach he will send whoever he wants or he can get a dad out of the stands.

Does your association have a board of directors? That would seem like the only real recourse you would have. I understand what it's like having assigners that are asshats, it's pretty infuriating and humiliating. Big difference here is I have access to more than one "gig" locally and have the luxury of not having to work for that association if I don't want to. Sounds like a pretty solid EJ to me, only piece of advice i could possibly offer is don't try to have the last word saying things like "that's fine", you may as well have said "actually this is MY field right now" which needlessly escalates the situation. It's a nit picky thing, but perhaps coach wouldn't have followed through had you not challenged him back after the EJ. Once they are gone, don't even acknowledge them they are already tossed, nothing more you can do except start digging a hole for yourself

I wonder if it was the other way around and you had complained about the coach if it would have been handled that quickly.... I agree with scrounge, why even have an assignor?

"And that's 3 errors your team made so you're still ahead!"

You need to find a different person to work for if he is going to kiss the coaches rear and not stick up for umpires when they do the right things that are defendable, as you have done, in this case. I am an assigner myself for summer ball and it will be a cold day when a coach is going to dictate the officiating of my umpires. You were within your rights and the assigner is the jack wagon.

It's a tough pill to swallow for sure. My suggestion is this; change the dynamic. Create a new organization, staff it with the best you can find and start making calls to the local leagues. Chances are, your not the only one to experience this problem with both the coach and assignor. Yes it's hard work beyond what you doing now but in my experience people do recognize quality especially when they have something to compare it to.

And everybody here probably thinks I am nuts when I harp on this issue.

Pitiful, plain pitiful. This probably happens elsewhere, but many are afraid to speak up.

Assignor must need the money.

What a no good, low down, jackwagon this assignor is. I am going to quit now. The blood pressure is going up.

Years ago, when I was doing college ball, a coach proceeded to tell my partner "that's 2 you've missed". My partner asked him what his major in college was. He said " history". My partner said "wrong answer" and the coach no longer existed! :rollinglaugh:

If this happened in our association, our assignor would have put us on the next possible game for that coach.

Exactly. That's what any assignor worth his salt would do.

I would ask the assignor if he felt it was a bogus ejection. If he says yes, then ask him how he would handle it. Does the assignor actually umpire? Even if he is going to allow the coach to take the two doubles, he should make sure he replaces them with something else.

He said it was a good ejection, and if it was regular season he would send me right back. But since it is summer ball he can't do anything about the coach not wanting me back. He did give me other games so I didn't lose out, but it still pisses me off that the coaches have free reign during the summer

What a jerk...I thought assignors were supposed to stand up for their umpires! It doesn't make any sense that you lose two games just because a coach didn't think it was very nice of you to throw him out. EJ was the right move in my opinion. You told him to stop arguing balls and strikes with you and he didn't. That will always be grounds for an EJ

OK, I take back the part about your assignor being a jerk, it sounds like it was out of his hands. Still stupid that the coach can say he doesn't want a certain umpire, though
