MS County tournament championship game. Bottom 6 winning run R3 2 outs. Contract school hosting but is VT. WP to backstop, R3 breaks for home, pulls up and heads back to 3rd. F2 gets the ball, sees R3 going back, throws to F1 at the mound. R3 bumps into F5 before getting back. HP screams, "That's Obstruction!!!" Awards home to R3 to end the game. Contract school loses county championship on this.

I know contract school doesn't matter, but our assignor kept emphasizing this point at the meeting. BTW, I wasn't there to see it, but BU is the one who told the story and HP didn't disagree. HP has summarily been black balled from that particular school.

Obstruction is hindering the runner. Just bumping into a fielder doesnt mean the runner was hindered. So, Id say it was likely a bad call.

This is a blown call in both FED and OBR. For OBR, even if you call OBS, it would be Type B (they were not making a play on the runner) and you would only award R3 home if you felt he would have gotten there if not for the obstruction. In FED, you would not call OBS because the contact did not alter the pattern of play. This was VERY OOO.

Ok, I see a lot of things wrong with this.... first why is the HP umpire making an obstruction call on a runner back into 3rd? Was this a 1-man, 2-man, 3-man, or 4-man Crew? If there was another umpire anywhere on the field besides HP, this should have been his call. If the call looked as bad as it sounded when I read it, how can you be an umpire on that crew and allow that call to be made? During the ensuing argument, (and I'm sure there was an argument) I would have been giving my partner the sign or wink, or tug of the ear, or something to let him know that I had something different and the crew needed to get together. If no one did that then every umpire that was on that field should be banned.

This is the guy that pores through the rule book, finds something he didn't know, then hunts for it. Aside from that, how would you propose to fix this. If I make a judgement call that you disagree, thats really too bad. Even if we get together and still disagree, the call stands. OBS should never have been called here, but no way to fix it unless BU convinces HP to overturn his own call. If he won't.......

The only way to fix it is to have the manger protest and force the crew to pull a rulebook out to avoid the protest. He has pulled a call from an orifice we need not discuss. The ball went to the mound so there is no way this affected the play unless the pitcher was able to then throw over and put the runner out.

under normal circumstances, Chuck, I would completely agree and never say that. However, I'm talking to mostly umps, and if you knew the guy you'd probably say the same thing. I won't name drop, but you probably know who it is.

I agree Chuck, but we all know an umpire or two in our respective areas that will do the same type a thing.
