This one is in my neck of the woods, but not schools covered by my association. I think from the story, the umps handled it as well as they could once it broke lose. Harsh penalties by the VHSL, as the article stated, double forfeit, one team for sure all suspended its next game, probably the other, and each school fined $300. Sad day for high school baseball.

Just ugly. Glad to see the umpires ended it right then and there.

Check out the play at 0:20 in the first video. Hard to tell from the angle but do we have interference on the batter or catcher's obstruction and a balk?

I was having the same thought. F2 seemed to move early.

F2 reached out over the plate as the batter was beginning his swing. Catchers Interference and a balk. R3 to home, R2 to 3B, R1 to 2B, BR to 1B.

That's fine, but that's not what was called.

Let's talk about the Inteference call on the bunt.

Is there an echo in here? ;)

The only way you can get two here is if the batter struck out on the pitch. Otherwise, since there were less than two outs, R3 is out and the batter stays at the plate.

Rule 7-3-5 Penalty states that the only way you get a double play is if the batter has struck out and interferes, you can get a double play. Otherwise, with 2 outs batter is always out. With less than 2 outs, if the runner is stealing home, runner is out on dead ball unless out is made otherwise on him, otherwise if play to other base and is unsuccessful, batter is out.

Since the Balk happened first it is automatic "Time" so what happens after is mute. Correct? Unless there is MC?

That would be correct, but not what was called.

Yep, in FED the balk kills it so all further action is moot.

I realized that. I just asking IF it would have been called like it should have been.

Understand, just stating the obvious I guess.

UPDATE: One school appealing the suspensions, claiming not all its players left the dugout area.

Where is catcher's obstruction a balk in FED?

Evidently it is not. I was thinking it was but upon reviewing the rule, on CO, any runner attempting to advance is awarded their advance base but if not then they would only advance if forced.

Case play 8.3.1 Sit. B.

My mistake, sorry.

...And the HC saying "the umpire's got to take control of this". Always our fault. :shakehead:

I cant tell if F2 gets out in front of the plate. Wonder if there were two strikes on the batter when he called BI and thus getting the out on R3.

P.S. from the OP video... got to love head rat for the green team blaming the umps for his kids bad choices.

The VHSL upheld both teams being suspended its next game and those in the actual fight getting 2 games (VHSL minimum suspension for fighting). The other school had self penalized, while the school in this article waited for the decision, but both schools got similar punishment, as was outlined in the earlier reports.

I'm totally fine witht the 1 game suspension for each team and two additional for each individual in the fight, however, I tend to agree with the piece that claims Lineberry didn't seem to do much. It looks like there is obstruction by F1 and Lineberry only pulls up his hands at the last second. Once the brawl starts, he doesn't seem to enter it.

I can't believe that there is only a $300 fine to the schools. In Alabama the 1st ejection for the year on any player or coach is $350 ( I think ) per person. If you only had 10 player on one team ejected in this situation that would be $3500. Some schools pay the fines while others hold their players and coaches accountable for paying their own fines.
