or a cream or a powder blue. The Official's Choice advertises them. Honig's has navy and black. I am sure there are others. I only wear black and navy in long sleeves. Our assigner would eat you up for wearing the undersleeves showing under a short sleeve shirt around here. If you were here you might get a JV or Freshman game but only if no one else is available and the bad thing is he won't tell you why unless you ask. He takes games away in mid-season from guys who disregard his uniform instructions. We use Arbiter.net and the transgressors just get an e-mail telling them that a game has been changed and then it is gone from their schedule.

Same in my association, during spring. In summer league, they're even tougher, because that association is newer and still trying to market themselves as the premier source for umpires.

It's like they say, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

I just read this thread after stumbling upon it. Hilarious. Thought I would add one of my own and bump the thread so other newbies could enjoy it.

One guy at our local league uses his plate brush on the bases, in between each and every inning. He cleans at least one base and the pitching rubber. ugh!

He also has his shirt lengths shortened enough so they won't tuck in, apparently it keeps him cooler in warm weather. It makes all of his shirts look like they were bought in the kiddie section. (My apologies to Tim if he visits UE)

My admission is that I wore the beanie hat the very first season I started, but I know it looked good on me. Why else would everyone be staring at me?

They thought a penis had made its way on to the field and was masquerading as an umpire?

Think about that one. ;)

you might be a smitty if

your the BU and you sit in the first base dugout between innings because its hot outside and you need some shade.

you make a close call and between innings you go explain to the coach why you made that call.

You ARE a Smitty if you:

1) resurrect a thread from more than 18 months ago (or, really, more than 18 days ago)

2) Type "your" instead of "you're"

I'm a "sneak-smitty" in this regard. Yes, I use a paintbrush. Now for the sneaky part... The handle has been cut off and it was never used for painting (no paint spatterings). It is the same size and shape as a commercial plate brush, but instead of buying a new plate brush, I simply used something that was collecting dust in the garage. It's still in decent shape, so until it's no good anymore, I ain't buying a new plate brush.

Just call me Smitty!!!!

The least expensive piece of gear of any kind that an umpire could need, and you devise a lower-cost alternative?

You're not a Smitty; you're cheap.

Why did you not capitalize the word resurrect? That's a glaring style inconsistency. You did spell it correctly, however.

There is nothing wrong with resurrecting a thread if you add to it. Moriarty said he came across it and wanted to bring it back for other new guys to read. The only other to do that is start a new similar thread and add a link to the old thread.

mr. noumpere

why in the world would you respond to my reply in such a childish manner. Im sure many posts and replys mirror others from the past. I had no idea that I posted something that had been posted before but at the same time I dont care, the question is why would you care. maybe you sit in the dugout between innings, maybe you cant stand behind your calls and have to explain them. what ever the case may be im sorry if I hurt your feelings. oh, should I have said you're feelings i always get mixed up with that.

I wont bother to reply if you have a come back .

Yes I am

However.... since I'm strictly a volunteer umpire so far, I'd rather spend my money on things that are noticeable - like uniforms, or necessary - like protective gear. When it comes down to it, a plate brush is nothing more than a paint brush w/o a handle.

No one is more frugal than I.

That said, the bristles on a plate brush are significantly different from those on any paint brush I've ever seen.

I'd expect (pure speculation here) that the plate brush would last longer and would work better. By the time you account for the time spent preparing the brush (the value of this will differ by person), then I'm not sure that the paint brush is a better alternative.

Stan, those scrapper brushes are one of the best umpire inventions ever. The scrapper actually does a decent job of cleaning muddy plates. Just wipe it off on the grass, and you're ready to go. It's also good for knocking a couple of pounds of muddy Turface off your shoes, in between batters.

It's also thin and light, and if you need to carry one on the bases, for replacing those breakaway bags, it's slick.

Now with all the games we have in a drizzle (those games where after the first ball is hit out of play or gets too wet and you spend the rest of the game keeping 1 ball in a bucket of speedy-dry, and the plate is brown), THAT plate brush is something I'd consider opening my wallet, shoeing away the moths that fly out, and pulling out a little cash for!!!! Did I hear that +POS is back in business again?

My "Scraper" lasted 1 inning. In the top of the second, as I was sweeping to start the inning, the brush shattered into three pieces. Dan's put another one in the mail.
