The TOP umpires in Minnesota wear jackets on the plate.

The trend has not hit flyover country yet. I will continue to do so, while respecting the rest of my peers throughout the country who choose not to.

Fashion trends seem to hit the east and west coast first...so by probably 2020, I will not be wearing my jacket on the dish.

That's because it'll be 60 in February on a regular basis by then.

There is nothing unpopular about wearing a jacket on the plate or tucking in a jacket on the based as long as you are getting your calls right.

There's nothing wrong with it at all in my view. I usually wear a long-sleeve behind the plate and an un-tucked jacket on the bases. I will tuck it in if a partner prefers to tuck it in. (I have worn the new Majestic cool base convertible behind the plate, because it's almost like a long-sleeve shirt.)

But the fact remains that each is still an increasingly unpopular practice.

KFINN,

You know how much I love you, ....but, your comment above just isn't true outside of SoCal. It just isn't. It may be 1000% true for the groups and assignors you work for, but it doesn't mean it's 'nationwide' ... ;)

I think an un-tucked jacket looks horrible i always tuck i took mine to the alterations and had them take off the elastic cuff and put a small hem in it. On the plate i wear long sleeve its hardly ever cold enough here to wear a jacket on the plate.

Only in Umpire fashion:

  • Crease your ball caps.
  • Tuck your jackets in.
  • Get your pants hemmed too long.

I personally think a tucked jacket looks stupid.

I just not temperature that makes me want to wear a jacket, its rainy days too. On days where there is a light intermittent rain, I prefer a jacket that sheds some of the water instead of a wet long sleeve shirt. Since I work mostly 1-man, I tuck too. Otherwise the jacket gets in the way of the ball bags.

That is the reason for tucking in a jacket when working the plate. Like i said before, if the jacket does not extend beyond your belt, then fine, leave it untucked. But it really looks horsesh*t for a jacket to be covering any portion of the ball bags, and always have to reach in under the jacket to get to the baseballs. If your jacket is too long, tuck it in for cryin out loud. I personally think it looks pretty sharp, kind of a Robocop look.

If I am on the plate and I wear a jacket I will tuck it in for the above stated reasons. If I am on the field and I wear a jacket I will not tuck it in because I think it looks silly and serves no purpose. How my partner chooses to wear his jacket is up to him.

I have the Smitty Black with White Stripes no-elastic bottom....Works great! Wore it on the plate and on the bases early in the season. We are required to tuck ours in both on the plate and on the bases, so that is why i got the non-elastic bottom....I personally like the jackets, think they look good! But since we had a 98 degree day already, i think it is in the closet for the rest of the season! Nothing like living in the "Hell Hole" Central Valley! :beerbang

Wow - look at me. I had no clue jackets were "out of fashion" at the plate. I was told that long sleeve shirts are always out of fashion. Guess I'm wrong, especially since I sit here and watch the Cubs/Phillies game and the HP Umpire is wearing a long sleeve shirt. It actually doesn't look that bad either!

I don't have any elastic on any of my jackets. They're cut longer and make it easier to tuck.

Im with you Johnny G, I wear the navy w/rwb open bottom. I always tuck, and I agree notonly is it easier to tuck, its the only way to wear them. I recently watched my sons play both a babe ruth game and a little league game. Both umpires wore banded jackets. It not only looked unprofessional, but fat. If you tuck it in it looks great with your belt and pants.

To each his own. If you want to tuck then tuck. If you don't then don't.

I'm not tucking unless told by my associations that I have to.

I have no choice. I purchased an open bottom jacket for the plate. I was watching a game a couple weeks ago and the guy had didn't tuck his jacket. It was pulled up in the back and he was showing more than he should have. To be honest I hate my jacket and will be purchasing stuff to ensure I never have to wear it again.

I wear open bottom tuck in when on the dish. Use elastic bottom no tuck when on bases. Both black Smitty's and find them to be comfortable.
