If you are genuinely unsure if he went or not, check. Catcher may have popped on you, so you need to check. Also, with runners and a count that could move runners, check right away, particularly if it is an D3K.

Cover this in your pre-game. Tell your partner to give you what you've got. 99% of the time it will be a "no he didn't" ( in B & C ) but you will both look like a team and satisfy the catcher/coach who asked you.

Where ever he is, ask. He may not have as good a look as when he is on the wing but he can still give you what he has. If he isn't sure then he safes it. There is no down side, either he confirms your call or gets a strike.

I was corrected last night at out meeting. I was told that if the "Coach" asks for an appeal then ask your partner where ever he is. But we were also told if your in B or C and are not 100% that your partner missed it then just agree with your partner.

That's not a good way for them to phrase that. You aren't determining if he missed it or not, you are determining if the batter swung or not. If you have an attempt, bang it, if you aren't sure, safe it.

I don't know if I'll ever understand the animosity against asking your BU about a check swing, especially when they're in B or C.

I'm with yawetag...I can get a better look at times when in B or C than I can in A. But hey, if I can sell it, I'll ring it! If I'm behind the plate and I have any question I'm going to my partner...the worst that can happen is we get a ball

We have been told the catcher is the one who needs to ask. If I am unsure I ask right away but in terms of being asked from the "outside" I tend to wait for the catcher or pitcher to ask for the appeal when I do not go. Too many so called coaches in dugouts and only HC can talk to us.

By the way, it's checked swing.

Leave it to KFinn to correct this one. You are the man! LOL

I will never go to my partner if the pitcher asks. Only ones that I will acknowledge a request from is the Head Coach or the catcher. As a matter of fact, while I am taking pitches before the start of the game I will tell the catcher that if he wants me to ask my partner on a CHECKED swing (for you Big Kev) I will.

And a tip of the creased, black six-stitch to you, BT!

It wont let me "like" this post so I will just take a nod from Rolo and +1 it instead.

NCAA allows any player to request the help. I'm not sure about HS or Pro.

And NCAA and HS call it a half swing, just to complete the language lessons. lol.

OBR Rule 9 calls it a "half swing".

MLBUM calls it a "check-swing" (with a dash) and when discussing Rule 9, "half-swing" (with a dash).

PBUC calls it "checked swing", "half swing", "check swing", (no dashes).

There was no punctuation until the 15th century.

The dot over the letter 'i' is called a "tittle".

My wife has a student who spells her name "La-A", and it is pronounced "Luh DASH ayy" and she believes anyone who can't read and pronounce it correctly the first time is "dissing" her, so that's awesome.

It's Friday. . .

Would you believe that my neighbor's father has a patient with that same name?

Let me guess: "That dash ain't silent!"

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but in keeping with Jeff's "Search First" directive... :D

Has anyone else heard that the check-ed/half-swing (whatever you want to call it) appeal will go to the wing on the closed side? For instance, RHB the appeal goes to U3 and vise-versa.

Posted

NCAA experimented with that this past year. Basically they were instructed to appeal to the umpire on a line if a runner was on. Ex. RHB with R2 check swing. Appeal last year would have gone to U3. They changed back to the appeal mechanic we are all familiar with this year.

Yup, it was a one year experiment that sounded like it wasn't real popular to start with and caused to much confusion last year so the Coordinators voted to put it back to the old mechanic.  It was discussed thoroughly at the regional meeting.

Greg, does the PBUC Manual have anything on it?  I assume it does, that's the one Manual I still lack.
