what the hell is it anyhow ?? nothing there.......

I watched for a few minutes. Then FF through the game. I will say I thought the plate guy looked pretty sharp and crisp with his mechanics. The sections I saw I didn't notice the BU.

I watched 3 sec and could tell he went to Umpire school...

Which one? Weren't you the one that said you could tell the difference in their plate mechanics?

I watched 3 sec of the PU..and can tell you he went to school...the plate mechanic are pretty much the same.. it is the base mechanics that you can telll... But I would guess he went to Jim's.

I made the point in another thread that the way to tell the difference in a pro grad was on the base mechanics. Somebody said they could tell on the plate mechanics, which I allowed that I couldn't. I can tell quickly in a clinic setting, certain phrases are only used at Harry's, others only at Jim's.

I know a couple friends of mine went through school and didnt make it into PBUC but got accepted to work independent leagues. There are also ones that use upper level guys including D1 guys. The former Golden Baseball League did that. Know a bunch of the guys that worked that league and I think work the CA and AZ games for the North American League. They are some of the best umpires I know.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I know Frontier League in my area likes to see pro school on the resume. I'm sure it's not a deal-breaker for someone with a lot of experience and clinic attendance, but it certainly helps.

If you're interested in the Northwoods League, here is the letter you will get from them if you reply:

Good evening! I'm sending this email I've forwarded to all applicants to the Northwoods League

My name is Bob Bainter, and I am the incoming supervisor of umpires for the Northwoods League. I have received your applications from Winston Wood, and I am writing to thank you all for your applications.

Some of you I already have met (Hello Sam, Carson and Doug!) and it's good to see you're interested again. For the majority of you, though we may not have met yet, I'm looking forward to speaking to you all.

If you look on the Northwoods League website, you will notice I'm not listed as a supervisor yet. This is because I only recently took this position. So please, allow me to give you a little background information

on myself and what the NWL has been doing in the past three seasons and again this year for potential applicants.

I was a member of the inaugural umpire staff of the NWL in 1994. I became the first NWL umpire to become a minor league umpire, and was the first of many NWL umpires after me to enter the A, AA, and AAA level, and

the first to work a MLB spring training game. In 2009, I began a small umpire program in Cocoa, FL, called the Oceanside Umpire Training Seminar. This program has evaluated potential candidates for the NWL each year, and many of these umpires have returned a major league umpire school the following year and advanced into MiLB. In fact, this season, 6 of the 7 umpires who returned to an umpire school have advanced from those schools to the PBUC evaluation course. We are thrilled to have had those umpires in our league, and in my program, and wish them the greatest successes!

Our NWL evaluation camp runs this year from March 21st through March 30th in Cocoa Beach, FL. The cost per umpire is $500.00, and that includes your housing for nine nights, triple-occupancy (in an all suite hotel, so there's plenty of room for three!), and a paid breakfast each morning. If you are commuting or choose to stay off-site, the cost is $250.00, breakfast included. We are working very hard to get a second meal, at no

additional cost to you, for the seminar, but I can not and do not promise anything that I can't come up with. So we'll leave it at one meal for now. You will also receive a camp t-shirt and hat. We will be staying within a block of the Atlantic Ocean, on beautiful Cocoa Beach, within a block of the world famous Ron Jon Surf Shop, and are in a block of several restaurants for your convenience.

We have found that the only way to find quality umpires is to invite them to Florida so we can work real games, as well as drills, and see what each individual umpire has to offer. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN UMPIRE

SCHOOL GRAD to be considered for the NWL. However, you must be in attendance to be potentially offered a position because the NWL no longer hires full time umpires who have not been through our program.

The program website is www.outschool.biz . You can contact me directly at 309-363-9995, or at bob@outschool.biz . If you are interested in becoming an NWL umpire, please follow the directions on the website. You will need to fill out the application on the "ENROLL HERE" tab, and follow the payment options at the bottom of the screen.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please contact me ASAP. Spaces will fill up this year very quickly, and we do have 16 full-time positions as well as consideration for part-time fill in positions.

Thanks for your time and hope to see you in Florida next month!

Just to be clear, the NWL is a college summer league and not "Indy Ball"

Correct. Thank you for clarifying that point.

Just to be clearer by NWL I meant Northwoods League and not The Northwest League (NWL) which is short season A ball. (and the closest to me :)

Speaking of the NorthWest League. GOD I hope Milwalkie can get a team. Vancouver really screwed up by waffling and then giving up on trying to get the team out of Yakima. We had them and lost them. And the addition of a team to Vancouver would have been great. Jobs for building a new stadium on the Clark College campus, jobs for people working at the stadium, jobs, jobs, jobs. But no!

Just makes me mad. Oh well. Hope a team comes near you guys so at least there is some kind of pro ball in the Portland metro area.

So did a practice game at Clark College yesterday (on the dish for almost 4 hrs - 9.5 innings) seeing some pitches for the first time this season. Talking to one of the assistants for the team about the field and the stadium was telling me that Yakima still would prefer to move to Vancouver over Milwalkie. And that they have some people that are willing to raise some private funds to do it. So Vancouver getting a team still might not be dead. WOOHOO!!!
