Ball bags

On a side not, while we're talking about ball bags, has anyone ever seen someone wearing a ball bag in the field? I have never personally seen this, but each year at our association meetings our asssignor has to address the situation because someone has done that before. I don't see how anyone could be so crazy as to think this is normal, but I thought it was rather funny!

I have not seen this personally, but I have heard a few stories of field umpires showing up wearing a ball bag.

What do you do if you get drilled?

I don't keep mine in my hand; it stays in my pocket but I update the count every pitch just in case I wear one that stuns me. Even when working with scoreboards, I don't rely on them as official.

Half the time the operator misses my signal to correct the board (how this is possible, when I have my hands waaaaay over my head, I do not know)

Ive been spoiled over the last couple years with working college ball. Very rarely do I have an issue with the score board being wrong.

Just moved to Portland, OR and sadly didnt make it into the college unit up here. Need to be seen by guys in the know up here and hopefully can make it next year. Will see if the HSs around here can live up to my scoreboard expectations.

A ball bag is where I keep baseballs.

There's nothing else I carry in there.

Lineup cards and smokes w/ small lighter are in the shirt pocket; plate brush in back pocket; cellphone clipped to back right of my belt; water bottle clipped to back left of my belt. Keys are where they always are, on the stainless steel heavy duty retractable key chain, on the right front of my belt. Did I miss anything? Oh! the "mask hanger"... I wanted one, but there wasn't room for it!

The only thing you missed was the "Fanny Pack"... oops I mean the "European Carry-All"... oops I mean the "Man Purse" strapped around your waist. This is were I like to keep a Sports illustrated, a handful of Hershey Kisses, and a pocket book size illutrated chart for umpire hand signals for quick reference. Instead of clipping a water bottle on to my belt (just to free up space) I am actually thinking about getting my oldest boy to send me a Army issued "Camel Back" so I can hydrate all game long with a tube hanging out of my mask, or preform a timely "7th inning stretch" enema with a tube hanging out of my...? in any case I am a fully armed, geared, and a prepared Robo-ump!

Got to do this on Saturday... I was supposed to have the plate, but I got hit in the knee that morning and couldn't do it. My partner took the plate but was wearing those "sport pants" so no belt. He's said, you hold onto the balls... Kind of weird, running around the bases with a bag full of balls. Especially when later in the game he started keeping balls in his pocket. Poor pitcher didn't know who to turn to for a ball... And yes, I also got to keep an indicator in the field - which I guess was a good thing, since he lost the count 3-4 times...

On another side note - I'm looking to buy a new ball bag. Any suggestions? I do softball and baseball and the one I have now is really tight with two softballs in it...

How much do you wanna drop on one?

I use the plain old Honig's cloth ones. If you sweat a lot, consider the Honig's Dry-Lo - the guy at the CWS with the "wet sack" could've used them me thinks.

And if you wanna splurge, go with the Ump-Attire Ultimate. It does everything except call the pitches for you.

I have the Dry-Lo's in black and ultimate ball bags in blue. I like them both. Although, I probably lean a little toward the dry lo. It is not as heavy and seems easier to get the balls in and out of. I do not have the problems with the corners of the bag sticking up like was mentioned in the midwest ump review.

I would say that if you need to order stuff from Honig's (or umpire.org) go with the dry los. If you are place an order from Ump-attire go with the ultimate.

It is a same to pay shipping just for ball bags.

Yes you did! That is the equivilant to me as a "Greenhorn" apprentice electrician (yrs. ago) running all over town looking for a "wire stretcher" (which I did!), or an apprentice carpenter going to Home Depot asking for "level fluid".

I wear one, LL. I'm lucky if there are new game baseballs there, let alone three of them. I use the ultimate. I don't carry anything out there. Just brush, indicator, baseballs, car keys in zipper pocket and lineup card (if necessary) and one these nifty mini-pens I found for a song at Staples. Yeah, I use pens.
