I have started calling and signaling at tge TV on close place. I just started doing this in tge past few weeks. I just had my wife come in from outside and ask me what was wrong because I yelled "Out" (I even pumped him out). I LOLed and she huffed and went back to talking on the phone. I must have yelled it loud like I would at a game. LOL I don't know!

I was just wondering if this happens to anyone else?

When I get to watch baseball (which only happens a few times a year), I'll call it in my head and maybe out loud. I don't think I ever make the signals, though.

I will, however, practice signals when no one is around.

I'm glad you started this post because I thought I was losing my mind. I'll call and pump the "out" before it's called on TV. I've done it at live games too. I'll also call and signal the "strike" call in front of the TV (and I'm doing that from the centerfield camera, so I get it wrong sometimes). Once baseball blue is in your blood, it sticks with you in a lot of odd ways!

The plate umpire in the Cubs v. Brewers game today was just calling every strike with a fist up ward infront of him over the catchers head. It was driving me nuts!!!

I started working on my strike out "book tear" just to drive my wife crazy. She told i was a Retard and my boys just LOLed at me.

I'll be driving in the car and snapping off some outs. I've even done it with the wife in the car and feel the wrath of her scorn.

Last week I went to visit Mazz at one of his games and was standing at the fence by first. There was a batter who was hit by a foul in the box. I nearly shouted foul too. My hands were coming up from my side. That would have been funny.

I did that at one of my son's games. I was sitting about 15' from the plate, just to the right and behind. Batter gets hit, I jump up, throw my hands in the air and yell, "Time!" Luckily, I knew the ump...

You are all sick in the head....lol

Try a little meditation and relaxation.

Breath in

Breath out lol

My wife has told me I have rang someone up on a called 3 k in my sleep as well as give the "that's enough coach" warning.

We are all demented.

Don't forget your timing when making your calls at an MLB game. Let the TV camera have time to swing over to you, before you call that out at first.

(Actually, that timing trigger may be the best advice you'll get here today, as it's taught by many good instructors.)

Every now and then I'll be watching SportsCenter, and make the call... Don't usually fist pump or anything though.... I did once have a ball game on the TV while I washing dishes, I heard the announcer say "He's rounding third, there will be a play!" and i ran as fast as I could into the living room, got set, and made the out call.

So, you need to change that technique, taught at Evan's clinic and from what I hear, at the umpire schools, as soon as you leave the schoolhouse?

If you've got a problem with the umpire doing a hammer strike, you need to see what pro schools are teaching today.

Why do most umpire finger point to the right? I will give the hammer for an out or swinging strike.

MLB umpires? Because there's enough old school ones around. Look at the newer guys and you'll see a hammer strike.

Amateur umpires? Because it's what they've seen on television. I can tell you that my association is only teaching the hammer, but does allow you to do what you want.

Posted

Missouri wants their umpires to use the hammer for highschool baseball.

There was some groaning, at our association meeting, about that.

Posted

Most clinics and associations now are teaching the Hammer for a few reasons:

1. Its an easy mechanic no footwork involved(which instructors are super picky about with the point) unless its a swinging strike(then dropstep and hammer)

2. It gives them a baseline to judge students/umpires by.

3. A good crisp hammer mechanic looks really sharp.

9 times out of 10 people who think that they have a great point, an evaluator would probably disagree. I have had a NCAA assignor tell me personally that it takes years to perfect a point mechanic.

Get to a camp! Might change your whole perspective on things.

Can't afford camp but I am seeing this more. I may work it in to my mechanics next year.

The more I see this the more I like it. Out front hammer, both dugouts can see it and have no question.

I need to find a job so I can go to one of these schools! 
