carlucci gear

i have a unique opportunity , to buy some carlucci gear CP and LG . i dont know the condition , a retiring umpire is selling the gear along with other shirts,pants ect.... i havent discussed any $$$ with him yet .so im looking for a little guidance from the group, as to a fair market price ? ranging from poor (very used) condition to good condition , with normal wear tear . what would be the low $$ and high $$ for each piece CP and LG ? i dont believe there is any way to get this gear repaired or parts replaced , since the family business no longer operates ? appreciate any thoughts in advance .

My advice would be to try it on first if possible.

If I remember correctly, and Tee can tell you for sure, Carlucci gear was custom made.

No deal is too good if the gear doesn't fit you.

i agree , and yes i would try all of it on with a umpire shirt on. i just did a little research and the CP when new could cost $220-250.00 depending . i might see the gear today .

If the price is good, buy it and resell it. There are people that would buy it without trying it on, and probably would pay good money for it.

i did try on the CP and LG . they fit me good . this gentlemen has a similar build to mine . anyone interested needs to have a 6' 2" - 6' 4" height . LG will fit a 16"-17" leg . iam 6' 4" 250lb.s and the gear fits and covers all the ribs (i have a long torso ) . WV platinum or gold are too short for my torso length . i use a champion model P200 hardshell , and a douglas 15" and both cover the ribs area . so if anyone thinks they are about this size , this carlucci gear may work . i also have several honigs poly-wools (color heather) , plate and base . size 38 waist and 32" inseam aprox. on all pairs . the slacks are in excellent shape , no damage or unusual wear . they are all currently dry cleaned . and haven't been worn for more than a year . this umpire took very good care of his apparel and other gear . i also have two honigs mask's , one blue and one black model # K82 or K84, with nice calf skin pads and a spare set of pads . also in very good condition the pads are really in good shape, with normal wear only . i want to sell possibly all of items mentioned .

you may be right , they are honigs slacks though . and they arent brand new , maybe honigs produced a poly wool some years ago ? i will have to look at the slacks more carefully , for any info .

some more photos ................. as you can see this is a complete set . gear bag , (2) wet shoe bags , CP, LG , i believe i have a mask that goes with this set also . it is (royal) blue . it seems to match with all the other royal blue gear , and comes with some matching mask pads . that are definitely part of the set , they have the same royal blue , and use button snaps instead of velcro . you can tell that they are from the same era in time . this gear is from 1979 (according to the seller), and was still being used up until a year ago . he worked HS varsity and above , some semi pro , and some div. 1 or 2 . and was completely comfortable behind the dish . it is in very good condition . he had no other gear this was it !! for all those years .i can post the mask later with the matching old school pads . i also have pants to sell , and can post photos also .

here are some photos of the slacks , all heather grey . white inside is base , black plate . i have (2) plate matching , (1) plate seperate, (2) base matching . to clarify what i mean by matching , the heather color is consistent . the slacks are from different years i believe , and thus arent all of the same heather grey . plus dry cleaning and some change due to being in the sun i presume , is part of the normal change with this material . i believe i made a mistake in stating that the two masks are honigs . the blue may be part of the carlucci gear set (see photos) . i was looking at the calf skin pads on both masks (which are honigs labels) , but the masks arent marked as such . so the blue maybe not . the balck could be a honigs model though . i believe that all the slacks are honigs , materials not sure if poly wool or not ?

That's what I've been told .... it looks like a standard ribbed CP, but it's not .... I mean .... Tim Tschida wears one, among others...

My question is more around the materials. This gear looks like it would be an absolute furnace. I am not saying it is, that is just how it looks to me.

I know the Carlucci stuff is seen as the "holy grail" of equipment, but I will trust my Douglas just as much if not more than that CP any day of the week. It looks like it would be very hot as well.

it isnt a standard rib CP , mr carlucci made gear for pro umpires . during his era , there really wasnt anyone mass producing gear for umpires . i dont know what the material is between the leather , but it does feel very solid . it isnt some soft foam for sure . he knew how it had to protect/perform , after all he was a pro umpire . btw , when did the WV era start (hardshell) design i mean ? as far as being too hot to wear , that is in the eye of the wearer .
