No, not working college ball, that is just the organization that I am with. The MAC does all levels from U13 up to Div 1 college. The pipeline starts with U13, and the advantage is being able to work your way up while working with seasoned umpires that have worked college.

Your first year and you are working College ball? Oh, and welcome to the board.

I caught that too:question1:

I was wondering if that was a typo or maybe a slight slip of the tongue?

MAC recruits and trains officials for baseball and volleyball in and around the Mid Atlantic Region. We administer three organizations :

Mid Atlantic Collegiate (MAC) - A premier NCAA collegiate association of baseball umpires.

The organization does not, which I had previously responded, start new umpires in college, we have to work our way up the ladder just as everyone else does; however the organization trains all umpires to get to the Div 1 college level. The MAC provides umpires for all levels of baseball in the Mid-Atlantic region.

I wish we had that kind of thing here in SoCal. Would make moving up a lot easier.

I live in a small town in S. Louisiana. I started umpiring 4 years ago. I played ball until 1st year in college. I umped my 1st div I game last season. It was just 1 game that season, but was really great. Had a bang bang play at 1st and pickoff and had fair foul call. I have 3 boys and a great wife that puts up with me calling many games. Looking forward to being part of the discussion.

Good luck at the school. Remember, until then, you can always come here with questions to find the correct ruling.

Hello all,

My name is Mark Brisson. I am 54 years old. I live in Ocala, Fl. I'm married with most of my kids grown and a 15 year old stepdaughter still at home. I coached 13 - 15 yr olds for 5 years and then started umping 3 years ago along with one of my sons. I call 9-10, 11-12, 13-15yr old boys baseball and girls fastpitch softball. I also call an adult league under ncaa rules. All of the games I call use the two man system except the 9-10 yr olds who only get a single umpire. I visit this site often in search of answers and opinions regarding the rules and situations. I finally decided that it is about time for me to start asking some of my own questions and responding to those of others. I can't seem to learn enough fast enough and there are soooooo many situations that arise.

Hello all, my name is Mike and I am from Mooresville, NC. I am a new umpire this year, doing mostly Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth games this fall (7-8 machine pitch, 9-10 Cal Ripken Minors, 11-12 Cal Ripken Majors and 13-15 Babe Ruth) and I will do a full spring schedule in these age groups as well. I've never played baseball (I was a basketball player through college) but in 5 years of coaching and now one season of umpiring I have a passion for the game that 10 years ago I would have never predicted.

I'm 44 years old and have twin 13-year olds (boy/girl). My son got me into coaching 5 years ago and now I am at the point where I am ready to hand him off to far more experienced coaches that can help him develop as a high school catcher (contributing to my entry into umpiring). My daughter is also a competetive athlete (cheerleading) who has won close to 100 national championships since she was about 5. She may be the most competetive person I have ever met! Suffice to say that baseball, even umpiring, is far less expensive than cheerleading:).

I consider myself a student of the game and joined here to learn technique from veteran umpires as well as anything else I can pick up to help me gain knowledge and become the best umpire I can be. Looking forward to hearing how some of the bigger guys cope with equipment and clothing issues (I am 6'5", 250 lbs) as well as plate positioning although so far I have not had too many issues. I am just getting started and already I've read here some of the mistakes I have already made, good to see I am not alone. Longer term I would like to move into high school umpiring and see what else is out there.

Professionally, I am a Supply Chain manager for a Home Improvement retailer and prior to that I was a Supply Chain consultant who never saw his family as I traveled 200+ days a year for 13 years. Luckily, my current schedule is pretty flexible which should allow me to try and call some tournament games later in the spring.

Thanks for this great site!

Welcome Mike glad to have you here and welcome to our addiction.

I love the Lake Norman area. In 2002 I met with a major home improvement company in North Wilksboro, but they told me they were planning to move to Lake Norman soon and I got really excited, unfortunately they picked somebody else. Oh well.

Welcome Mike. We get many youth umpires from the coaching ranks when their kids age out. Having been a coach will give you a perspective into how the coach is thinking but umpiring is a different mind set completely. I'm sure you have already seen that but you have to try to be completely unbiased. Welcome to the crazy world of officiating.

Welcome Chris,

You'll find Empire to be another good place to learn and grow. Most of the posters here are interested in good debates, different points of view, and some good old fashioned fun. You'll also find a great mix of Veterans with solid knowledge and opinions.

Warren keeps things pretty fresh as far as the web site goes, with a lot of different gadgets we don't see at ABUA and other spots. Looking forward to it.

Tom
