    Infield Fly

There is a great example of this but I can't find a clip. If anyone who is more internet savy can find it, a similar situation happened in the Pittsburgh vs. Toronto Spring Training game on Sunday March 6th. The game was televised on Roger's Sportsnet. It was a called IFF that was reversed into a single after the ball dropped fair. I have never seen an IFF reversal like this before. Maybe in a regular season game it would be different.
  2. Good. I have the LUC pads on my Wilson Titanium. They look super sharp. I'm not really a fan of the Wilson wraparound pads that were originally on the mask. I purchased them from sportsdepot.com
  3. What's the difference between the LUC and PUC pads? And where can you get the PUC pads?
  4. do not say 2 balls 2 strikes--just 2-2 2-1 1-2 etc etc--with runner on 1&3 field ump is in b FED is in c but more and more High School associations are going to the NCAA-Major leage mechanics of ump in b with 1&3 . runners on first and third...in the b position or c position...where do they mean by b and by c Base umpire B = First base side in rear of mound C= Third base side in rear of mound

    OBS? INT?

Jim Evans Diamond Challenge Pg. 93. Situation: The batter chops a ball down the first base line. The catcher starts for the ball as the batter is leaving the batter's box. The batter collides with the catcher from behind. Is the catcher guilty of obstructing the runner.... or.... is the batter guilty of interfering with the catcher? Ruling: 7.09j When the catcher is in the act of fielding a batted ball and a serious collision occurs form behind, the batter is out for interference
  6. I tried Baseball Plus and Sports Depot but neither had the 17" model (both had the 18"). Both said they were back ordered from All-Star.
  7. The shin guards you are looking for are the All-Star LP11. I was also looking at them last month but the 17" model are on back order until March or April. If you are looking for the 18" model, I believe they are available. Try sportsdepot.com and all-starsports.com
  8. I am a full time Journeyman Plumber and I work the average 40 hour work week (in the umpiring offseason). My employer is totally accomodating to my officiating. Any clinics, tournaments, games, etc. aren't a problem. Since I never really take time off in the winter (except for a few days here and there), getting the needed time off in the spring and summer isn't a problem. As long as I give some notice (usually at least a week) the boss is fine with it. He understands that we all have passions away from the shop. I couldn't imagine not being able to work the games you want (or attend different clinics, camps, etc.) due to an employer who isn't flexible.
  9. I use both the Under Armour "Compression" (skin tight) and the looser fitting "Touch Fitted" shirts (Under Armour 1217454 Touch Fitted SS Crew). The Touch Fitted shirts are probably what you're looking for. I buy all my UA stuff from sportsdepot.com - you may be able to find these shirts online cheaper elsewhere, but I've never had problems with Sports Depot so they can have all my Under Armour business. Their Cold Gear long sleeve shirts are also great for wearing under jackets for those cold spring days. note: they seem to have several colors available
  10. Please check to make sure you didn't get 2 pairs of base pants. There's a noticable difference. They are labled PBS1 & PBS2....I will check them out again. I know my GD plate/base are very different. Try them on with your shin guards on and you should see the difference. If not, call Honig's.
  11. The pockets are in the front with their openings parallel to the belt line. They look rediculious. I ordered 2 pairs from a Canadian distributor (plate and base). Since I wear two ball bags, the bags cover the pockets so I kept the plate pants. The base pants, on the other hand, were unwearable. I had to send them back. But, like I said, if you're a two ball bag guy they're OK on the plate but I wouldn't recommend them for the bases. Just to note - the western style pants I own are Honig's
  12. I get my pants hemmed by a local seamstress and she does a great job. I get them hemmed just barely off the ground at the back (when standing) and the hem angles to the front of my shoe. So the hem is about a 1/2 inch or so different from front to back of the leg. I hope this kinda makes sense. By the way, I'm also short and stocky (5'6") and also had the same problem. I don't recommend sizing up since your pants are just getting bigger.
  13. I wear GD size 36 and Poly Wool size 38. When wearing the GDs, I fully utilize the flex fit (ie: I expand them to do up the button). This way neither my base nor plate pants look baggy. My Poly Wools fit very comfortably in a 38 but the base slacks are a tad baggy. Therefore, I wear them a little higher to solve this problem.
  14. That's funny. That reminds me, a few years back I watched some old time highlights from the 40's and 50's. They showed a play at the plate which was close but the catcher obviously dropped the ball. On the play the umpire called the runner out immediatly and then changed the call to safe when he saw the ball on the ground with the "wing flapping" safe call. The commentator said something like, "Great job by the umpire on that call. His quick reactions made him change the call once he saw the ball dropped." It made me chuckle. Timing definatley wasn't relavent.
  15. I just got my parts in today. I wanted a better fit and I always had problems with the straps getting all spun around. So, attatching the harness was no problem but the straps that cradle your stomach and clip onto the front were too short. I had to cut the elastic strap from the WV in half and connect them (the 2 new cut pieces) to the existing clips just off the All Star harness. I then re-attatched the WV hooks (which connect to the front of the CP) and trimmed the excess strapping after getting a nice fit. The elastic cuts seem ok --- I will get my honey to add some stitching if they start to fray. I did heat the nylon cuts with a lighter though. I also got some All Star pads in for my mask. I currently have a Wilson titanium but wasn't too fond of the wrap around pads. So I added the All Star pads to my Wilson mask and kept the Wilson mask harness. The mask seems lighter with the All Star pads. The pads I ordered were the PFM25LUC black. I ordered through sportsdepot.com

    Infield Fly?

I had the same type of situation during an evaluation last year. The level we were doing was U19. We didn't call it and we were told we missed it. Our evaluator said, If there's arc, call it. I think this would depend on the level though.
  17. NCAA 7-11-f is the same as OBR 6.06(cee). JEA says in 6.06(cee) that almost anything is interference, even if unintentional. But in discussiog 7.09(d) which also covers interference at the plate, he uses the phrase "unnatural movement" so it makes it confusing. I beleive there is a J/R interp that says once the pitch gets past the catcher the batter should then be considered as "another teammate" and intent may then enter the picture - but I can't find my J/R at the moment. I do have a philosophical problem with punishing the batter for the defense's screw-up in the OP. JR refers to "another teammate" relavent to this situation is in reference to exceptions to batters interference. It states: Exceptions: A batter who does not become a runner may interfere with a player other than the catcher a -- when such batter releases his unbroken bat into the field of play and the bat hinders a fielder trying to make a play, or b -- after a pitch goes past the catcher; such batter interferes with a subsequent play on a runner at the plate (batter is treated as an "offensive teammate" for purposes of requirements and penalization) [7.08g] [7.09e]
  18. My initial gut feeling on this one was as follows: 1. Interference by Batter - Batter out since it was not a steal of home or suicide sqeeze 2. R3 returns 3. R1 stays at 2nd since he already attained 2nd at time of interference Now after digging into the JR manual I believe I have nothing on this play. In the section of Batter Interference it states: Note: If the batter's action is not intentional, does not involve the catcher's fielding of the pitch, and the catcher does not try to throw, then it is not interference. In your post it doesn't appear that any of the 3 above occur. 1. The interference is not intentional 2. It involves a tag attempt (not the catcher's fielding of the pitch) 3. And the catcher does not throw. Now I have a question --- When does the catcher's fielding of the pitch end? As soon as he gains control?
  19. OK, I'm aware that if you have a 3 ball count (prior to pitch) and there is a WP or PB then the balk is nullified (assuming all runners advance). Now Rich, are you saying that if it's a straight steal and a caught pitch by the catcher, we're enforcing the balk immediatly if all runners aren't forced because of ball four?
  20. It's a great book for umpires starting out. It gives some real MLB examples to go along with the rules.
  21. Would have to be a WP, PB, steal etc. (obviously with R2 advancing) situation. This would nullify the balk.
  22. Never in this situation.

    MLBUM

Ok great. I have the PBUC manual, so maybe I'll wait.

    MLBUM

How often is the MLBUM released? Would it be worth waiting untlil a newer edition comes out (ie: will a 2011 editon be issued?)?
  25. I would agree with you in regards to the pro game. MLBUM 6.23 (3) Runner is on second base when the batter-runner is obstructed after reaching first base. The umpire intends to award the batter-runner second base on the obstruction. What happens to the runner on second? Ruling: Runner on second is awarded third base. However: Baseball Canada wants it ruled the other way, with BR being called out. The OP comes from Canada. Therefore, on this sit, BCan wants you to follow the JR interpretation?
