Catch Over Dugout, Into Dugout; No Catch & Carry Here!
GiantEngineer replied to MadMax's topic in Situations
@ousafe my mistake on how I quoted. General question, is it possible to quote a quote and get it to show up correct or only the original text? -
Catch Over Dugout, Into Dugout; No Catch & Carry Here!

Is this interpreted as "in the air" or literally over the field as if there is a plane at the fence line? -
That was exactly what I was getting at. Just wanted to makes sure we were on the same page.

For those that care the exception is listed this year in NFHS 5.1.1.j
-
The ball stays live in IFF and is dead for intentionally dropped ball, so it does matter which rule is applied
-
Doesn't the IFF supercede intentionally dropped ball? So how could they both happen?
-
Unless Little League is different, you can definitely have BI in the box regardless of intent.
-
Can you provide a citation for NFHS?

If he entered the dugout, he can't return to home or third (or any base for that matter)

That's really funny. It probably depends on the rule set. FED has specific case plays on verbal obstruction (Ex: 2023 Case 2.22.1 Situation A)

Batter HBP After Bounce - Softball
GiantEngineer replied to Slippery Fish's question in Ask the Umpire
A pitch that bounces is still a live ball, so unless there is some local modification or the batter did something intentionally to get hit, they would still be eligible to take first base. I don't see how else a bounced ball wouldn't just be a regular pitch. -
I don't believe this is correct. A jab step or jump turn will get his free foot off the ground and both are legal moves.

Weird (potential) INT play - or is it nothing?
GiantEngineer replied to beerguy55's question in Ask the Umpire
Same in all codes? -
What about on a tangle up from an over throw to the fence with the runner beyond the base? Is the fielder not liable at that point if the runner tries to advance?
-
Glad I've never seen this, I've seen enough 12 and 14u runners walking back after stealing on a foul tip.
-
So what was the consensus? Is the move in the OP a balk?
-
At the younger ages the big ones are: -never coming set -start then stop -shoulder turn to look at 1st -fake to 1st on pickoff Beyond that it can get excessive depending on the age

Whats the weakest HBP call you have ever made
GiantEngineer replied to ArchAngel72's topic in Free For All
Had one girl squared to bunt and never pulled back and hit on the top of the helmet. FED- requires the bat to be pulled back in softball. So a dead ball strike on a head shot. -
Yes, you can appeal for advantageous 4th out.

2 bases from the time of the pitch (1st play by infielder) So R2 scores and BR will be at 2nd
-
That's why I suprised when the coach started asking. My question above was more a general question.
-
Thanks. The coach was convinced the batter has to totally get out of the way of any fielder. I tried to explain that only the fielder most likely to make the play is protected but I think he got more confused. And hard to follow the batter and the ball going towards the fence with only 1 ump
-
14u FED rules, 1 man Pop foul on 1st base side Pitcher, catcher, 1B go for it, it drops between them After inning coach came over and asked if the batter going towards first is interference. I did not see the batter do anything, I was looking at the potential catch. But do I protect all 3 fielders or is it the same as any other batted ball where only 1 fielder gets protected?

May to now about 40. I'll typically get to 50-60 when travel starts to wind down in July.
-
That was my thought but it just looked really strange, so I wasn't sure.
