  1. This. Same as when a batter ask you if that's the top/bottom. Answer yes and move on. Keep answers short. The more you say, the more they can hold it against you.
  2. It looks to me, and I may be wrong, that this is a cross body slide. Notice that his leg are off to the side and not going straight into the bag. If the runner slides it must be directly into the bag. Legs, trunk, and arms. The NCAA manual explains that part very well.
  3. If you are a new umpire, do this. In about ten years or more try something different.

    BOO

I'm impressed. Not by what you did. You were perfect. I'm impressed that the DHC waited until the improper batter completed his time at bat before appealing.
  5. LOL. Learned from the best^^^^^^^^
  6. Not always (level dependent) but usually, I play a deep B in this situation. Same position as I would be in 3 man as U3 with R1. If the ball is hit in the infield, the play is at home. I can then adjust easily for the 2nd play at 1st.
  7. You were solid. Great to have a chance to work with you.
  8. I like this part, not going to comment on the other stuff as others have already. When that happens, you point and say very loudly (and maybe you did)," That's contact". That way everybody knows he contacted you. Don't let a coach get close enough to "beak" you.
  9. Several years ago, I bought a Tracfone for taking out in the field. This thing was a very small flip phone and would fit perfect in one of the ball bag pockets. It cost all of $10 at Walmart. You have to buy these cards to activate it, but if you don't activate it, it will still call 911. I thought it was perfect for doing just that, calling 911, and telling the time of day. I actually never used it but I thought it was a good idea none the less.
  10. Here's a question about BI mechanics. You have announced loudly (I hope), "That's interference." and now your waiting for the results of the play. If the BI is nullified because the out was made on the runner, do you as a PU: 1. Step out with a safe signal and announce that the BI is nulified due to the runner being out. 2. Announce the BI is nullified 3. Do nothing. 4. ?
  11. This is one where you just have to umpire. I look at this play simply as who F*** up. The offense did. I'm killing the ball (bang) and placing runners at last legally aquired base. Yes the run scores but the offense gets no advantage from the overthrow. Also issuing warnings after the mess clears. I just want to add that I would'nt be sitting here being an internet umpire if it wern't for all this rain we've had on the west coast. I can't remember having this many rain outs.
  12. I don't call this balk. This one falls into the rule with the book, not by the book concept.
  13. Poorly trained would be my guess.
  14. I almost bought the farm yesterday. I was working a HS V game. This field has a very short backstop with a wall made of brick. Batter fouled one off that went straight back. The ball richocheted off the brick wall and came straight back towards the back of my head. It just missed but the ball managed to catch the left ear of my mask and rip it off my face. An inch or two to the right and it would have been lights out. I must have pissed off the baseball gods at some time during that game. I ended up taking a fast ball to the gut and the game went 12 full innings, 2hr-45m. I was glad to get home from that one.
  15. I was going to pipe in when I started reading the OP but the last eight posters starting with Rolando nailed it.
  16. You got that question right. I heard him say the comment about interference at the Palo Alto meeting. Alot of people missed the question about the pitcher going to his mouth while the ball was dead. Also the video question where F4 charges in and makes contact with R1 going into second.
  17. Read my post again. I edited it.
  18. You can't have interference on that play. (the part where he runs into the fielder). I think Tom said he screwed up calling that interference but he could not edit it out. One thing I learned on this play was to pay attention to how the runner reverses direction. In the video, he reverses twice and he does it on a dime. He does'nt reverse like that when he runs into the fielder. Further evidense that he is trying to draw obstruction. He could easily be called out for being three feet out of his established basepath.
  19. Red Sharpie
  20. I agree with Noumpere. I would be difflicult at best for the NCAA to start weighting questions. Thank goodness they simplified it down to 55 questiions and kept it in numrical order. BTW. I scored 100 on the 1st try. First time for that.
  21. So what is the consensus on 34. Ball or nothing. 9-2d ar1 steers me towards a ball.
  22. Yes
  23. I'm convinced.
  24. I'm having a problem with Q 17 for some reason. I'm using rule reference 8-2-F. I would have a hard time not calling R2 out if the ball hit him in the basepath and the ball had not not passed F5. R2, 1 out. B2 hits a ground ball to the left side of the infield. The defensive team has a shift on and the shortstop is positioned in shallow right field. The third baseman is playing deep, but at his normal position. The batted ball hits R2 as he runs toward third. The ball has not passed the third baseman, but he cannot reasonably make a play on the ball. a. R2 is out for interference and B2 is also out for his teammate’s interference. b. The ball is alive and in play. c. R2 is out for interference and B2 is awarded first base. d. The ball is dead, but since no fielder could make a play on the ball, the runner is awarded third. B2 is awarded first.
  25. Grayhawk....why? 9-1-A-1-C and AR 1 on pg 83 states otherwise. I intially had no balk for the same reason others have stated. Now I'm rethinking it.
