Ray, Just make sure that if you use the scissors to practice before using it on the field. Make sure that your front leg forms a 90 degree angle and (if I remember correctly) that your head should be over the top of your front knee. Me personally, when I do the scissors which is very few and far between, I place my hands on my knee just behind the shin guards to keep me at proper height and such.

Oddly enough, I think I said exactly that. Just a little more long winded. Do what the powers that be want you do to do.

They do not. In both cases that Mazz through out there the runner would not be out. In the case of the IFF he is protected by being on the base and in the second the runner is no longer interfering with the fielder's chance to field a ball so he would not be called out for that.

I had talked to some of the guys around my area and I think I have come to a conclusion as to my issues with Honigs. It comes down to customer service and feeling welcome when you walk in or talk to them on the phone. In SoCal I knew ALL of the guys there and it was like family. However here I feel like a stranger and that I am intruding when I walk into the office in Salem. I feel that old feeling dealing with Ump-Attire and thats why most of my business will go there.

Ball bags are among the best ball bags I have ever used. Only problem I have had with them (and I have let Jim know my thoughts) that they are just a little small. But I still use it as my main ball bag.

I usually will be in C with the bases loaded. However, I have been known to move to B, especially if I am getting pinched by F6 playing up. I find that I get a better look of all the plays that can happen (and honestly, how many times do you see a pick at third that you cant get over to in anything but in LL). However, with that being said. In SoCal and Im pretty sure its the same here in Portland. You are expected to be in C with the bases loaded and can get marked down in an evaluation if you are not. So guess where I stand.

Dont see why it wouldnt be the same.

Its one of the nice things about Ump-Attire. They have a couple things that you cant get anywhere else. Namely the Ultimate shirts and ball bags. Oh and the customer service its second to none.

I'm not a fan of the Flex Fit caps. I got one from an association I worked for briefly lasts year and hate the feel. If I work for them again this year I am buying a fitted hat.

In Oregon they use the CCA (college) manual. So R1/R3, BU is in B. California, for both HS and College the BU is in B in this situation as well.

cant wait to see an addendum to this that included the new Honigs Zero Gravity. I tried it on and tested it with a hit to my chest and sternum and did not like the feel of the contact.

First scrimmage coming up monday. Five umpires rotating in and out. Going to be good to get back on the field.

The scuttlebug here in the Portland area is that Tom Hiler will be at the BBUC camp as well... or at least have someone watching for him there. Tom is the guy that does the Umpire Development (among other things) for all of the NCAA as well as is the assignor for CCAA (D2 ball in CA) as well as the assignor for the NCUA which does the JuCo, NAIA, D3 and D2 in Oregon, Washington and I believe at least a little bit of Idaho.

My wife has asked me numerous times to show her my strike call and friends have always asked me to give a strike three call. I can never do it. Even though my strike call is just a straight hammer and strike three is just "pulling the chain" I still can not bring myself to do it for others unless I am on the baseball field, at a baseball meeting, or talking to other umpires. Anyone else have this issue as well?

I've just discovered that I need something for those inbetween days I have never had to deal with while umpiring in southern CA. Those days that hover around 50 degrees and dont get any warmer.

To quote Ed McMahan: "You are correct sir!" They are also to stop the shin guards from rubbing the skin as he moves. Ive been wearing leggings for the last 10 years plus. I feel lost without them out there.

Seriously. LOL I would say that for me also it would be one man for a majority of my games. However I have been lucky over the last year to work quite a few three man games.

I too try to never wear a jacket behind the plate. Especially my black jacket because it was not bought to fit over my WV. However, I worked a game in early October here in Portland and was blown away by just how cold I was. I decided right then and there I needed cold weather gear. First step was the long sleeve. Next step next month before the start of the season is the long shirts to go under the shirt. Knowing that the Smitty shirts are a little heavier than the Honigs is a great help and a good start.

She doesnt... but thats for behind closed doors :BD:

Was living in NoCal at the time and was, and still am, a huge Giants fan. I was in school at the time but I remember hearing about it afterwards. The game was at the old Olympic Stadium in Montreal verses the Expos. I remember watching the replay on tv for the next two weeks and every time you could hear that SNAP sound in that nearly empty stadium and just hear him scream in pain. It was horrible. Didnt he try and come back from it and it happened again to him? I seem to remember him trying.

Awesome... my order will go in tomorrow!

I met GD once when he left tickets for me to see him work at a Giants game when they played at Candlestick. Seemed like a really nice guy. I wish they would do a clinic up by me here in Portland because I would love to go.
