  1. It don't understand what difference it makes whether the attempt was "legitimate". Why reward (protect) the pitcher for throwing the ball away ?
  2. A couple of seasons ago, I was working a game at historic Rickwood Field, where the backstop is a good fifty feet behind the plate. with a count of two and two, and no one on, the pitcher has one get away from him and sail over my head. In the process of the ball flying by, the batter swung at the ball, leaving us with an uncaught third strike. Batter proceeds to wind up standing at second base. Defensive HC comes out to complain that "he can't do that". When I questioned him as to why not, he really had no answer, other than "it's not fair". I had to chuckle as he walked back to his dugout.
  3. Master the lower levels, first. Build competence, and confidence. Throwing a new umpire into the fire of higher levels is not usually a good idea. The higher pressure can create a question of ability in the newbie's head, and undermine his confidence. I have seen guys put into games above their heads, and it is painful to view. It can rapidly get out of hand, particularly if someone doesn't have the game management skills needed for any given level.
  4. Mrs. Peterson says I am out of shape, but I say she is wrong. Round IS a shape.
  5. Or where it comes to rest....
  6. Why did you interject yourself into your partner's discussion ? And why did you have to restrict the coach ? As was said earlier, the "any more comments" remark should have been left out. Dugout restriction automatically comes with that warning implied, IMO.
  7. And it would have been ignored four times, if I were in your shoes.
  8. But WD-40 smells better! Besides that, the whole point of using it is keeping oil and water off your mask. PAM is basically...oil...and water... And there is some reason that you think WD-40 ISN'T oil ??
  9. I find that the butter flavored Pam works best for me...
  10. I had a play in a JuCo game, ball hit to F6, who kicks it around. In my head I said "Never get him". Now you all know what happened: he was thrown out, and I called "safe". This was shortly after a throw to third that failed to retire a stealing runner ( I got that one right, for what it is worth), so out comes the coach, who is known as a pretty level-headed guy. Coach: " I know I'm not gonna get every close call, but they probably won't all go against me". Pete: "Coach, if I had that one to do over, I'm pretty sure you would like the outcome. I'll buckle down." Coach: That's all I can ask, Pete". He came to the locker room after the game, and had kind words for both my partner, and myself. I chalked the call up to being a refresher lesson on never deciding what will happen before it happens.
  11. Spreading the word and the law of the Gibby to the unfortuante souls who haven't learned his greatness since 2013. But have you perfected the "taking cleats to the face" maneuver ?
  12. Viagra makes socks? Cialis...get your facts straight.
  13. Way to stay classy, Gump...
  14. Since I wear compression pants for every game, I don't spend a lot of time analyzing socks. I have three pair of Power Sox that have lasted me four seasons. I just now need to replace them, so I looked online to see who sold them. I'll be making a trip to Academy Sports. 3 pair for $8.99.
  15. You mean four, right ?
  16. 63 year-old comedian was found dead today. Suicide is suspected. Very sad, as he was quite entertaining.
  17. Coincidentally, a guy from my high school recently joined the Village People. Seriously. You can't make this s*^$ up... Coincidentally, a guy from my high school recently joined the Village People. Seriously. You can't make this s*^$ up...
  18. Everyone EXCEPT OP's partner...
  19. Dear god no... ANYTHING but Rush, Listening to geddy lee sing is like listening to a cat in heat whilst the it rakes it's claws across a chalk board. I would sooner listen to the turd from stratford, Justin Beiber, no exageration. Rush is the greatest product from Canada since Bobby Orr. If one didn't want to listen to Gedy Lee's voice, they'd never get to experience a Neil Peart's percussion performance (worth the cost admission alone). DummerWorld writes, " Neil Peart is the most popular drummer today. When it comes to voting in Modern Drummer or Drummerworld - Neil Peart is always the No. 1." Geddy Lee also happens to be the best bass player since the legendary Jacko Pastorious. And Alex Lifeson is no slouch on guitar, either. One word -> Entwistle Entwistle was a fantastic bass player, himself.
  20. Alabama was one of those states, but then decided to allow the bucket IF you wore a hat. The hat requirement has since been done away with.

  22. This.
  23. I have literally seen batters and catchers flinch when @Jocko calls a strike, lol.
  24. I have to agree. That was more juvenile than the crap music to which you listen... I'm gonna fight For my right To paaaaaaarrrrteh. Beastie Boys ? Or am I going to be disappointed to learn that some horrible new band has covered their classic ?
  25. No, I meant Wally Backman is a jackass. And even then, I cleaned up what I began to type.
