  1. I call LL games and the pitch that is shoulder high but the bottom of the ball just catches the armpit IS A STRIKE! And yes, I get a lot of grief over them.
  2. I have an out for advancing head first.
  3. Wow. Very much a HTBT situation. After the plate meeting I would speak with him privately and tell him that while he may have been just joking, others see it and think it's okay. It is not. I would tell him that I take my responsibilities as an umpire seriously and that if it ever occurs again, I will eject him without warning. I'll bet he was just fooling around and has not heard the war stories that are shared here on U-E. I still want to put a stop to it.
  4. With the ball dead upon hitting the batter, there is no opportunity for the strike to be caught or not. No U3k. Dead ball strike, yer out.
  5. Why the qualification? because that's the rule set that I think I know
  6. If Little League, I have dead ball, catch, batter is out, runners advance 1 base.
  7. So, BR just reached first on a base hit and has rounded and stopped his advance, now standing 5 feet from the base. F1 gets on the rubber while the BR (now R1) takes off for second. F1 ignores R1 and pitches. I would assume this is a 7.13 violation unless R1 reached 2B before TOP? Sure sounds like it to me. Agreed.
  8. I had a short delay for a squirrel on the field on Saturday. I was in A, and noticed him shopping for seeds in the gear bags in the dugout. Next time I looked over he had his head under the fence, coming onto the field. I called time and pointed to the varmint (squirrel). The first base coach(varmint) herded him away from the plate area and out toward right field and he made his way back under the fence. Big laughs from the spectators.
  9. I think the only motivation they have to return to the base is to avoid being called for leaving early before the next pitch. Contrary to what some of the coaches around here teach, the ball is not dead when the pitcher is on the rubber so the runners can dance around all they want. If the pitcher pitches and the runners advance, you can enforce the penalties for leaving early. Absent that, not much you can do.
  10. The debate is if the ball hit the ground just after the bat hit the ball. Was that a caught fly ball or a gloved bounding ball in the infield?
  11. How long after surgery until you were able to work a game at the plate? I total knee replacement is next for me and I have been putting it off waiting for artificial knees that last longer than 20 years. What is the expected life of the artificial knee that you received?
  12. I use Avast on all family computers. I have used it for years. It's free. Four teens and no infections.
  13. Was this Little League Minors division? If that's the case in the first situation, I would score the run, leave the BR at first, and have a conversation with the coach. Runner loses the right to re-touch home when he enters the dugout.
  14. front INSIDE corner? the rest of the situation sounds like the front outside corner was in play.
  15. I feel fortunate to be in a league that at least tries to do the right thing. You are a very lucky man. I hope you will appreciate that every day of the season.
  16. Yes, LL does have a rule that prohibits jewelry.
  17. I've been umpiring for just over a year. I find that the managers are not learning from my reminders about jewelry at plate meetings and during the games. Every plate meeting that I attend, I or my partner mentions "properly equipped including no jewelry" and 90% of the games some players come out onto the field with jewelry. I work only LL games and always at the league where my boys play so I know all these managers. I am quite frustrated. Do you find yourself having to give the same reminders to the same managers all the time? The UIC has advised me that I can't EJ a manager for players with jewelry so no joy on that front Any advice appreciated.
