  1. To register with the state you have to join an assoc. So you pay for dues you aren't going get a reward from. Either pay ABUA for baseball only or pay NASO and get covered in all sports. There are discounts, additional literature and some additional coverages with NASO, plus Referee magazine. Incorrect rulings aside, there some very good articles about what we do. ABUA covers you for baseball, has some discounts and I believe some book discounts. I used to carry both ABUA and NASO, plus I was registered through the state. Additionally I was a LL and Pony registered umpire. Talk about over insured. :)
  2. Please forgive those of us who are traditionalists.... What makes black shoes traditional? Black is traditional because that's what's been worn for years. The all black Zigs are as ugly as the white ones. I personally hate white on shoes but don't ding guys for it. I find white on shoes ugly, I don't care if it's walking on a field or in the mall, they're ugly. I am a huge NB fan but they are still the black version. It took me almost 35 years to buy a mask that wasn't 100% black, and I only tried a grey frame because the vision was supposed to be better. White on my shoes will not change my performance in any way so it becomes a matter of looks, well it looks like crap. You are just an old traditionalist fart! Guilty
  3. Rich, usually you are bang on with the rules, I think here you missed the boat. The interference has to be called, kill it and return BR to first.
  4. Again, sorry for being so far behind on threads. If the initial throw doesn't get the runner, kill it and enforce the BI. It doesn't matter if it comes off the batter and the catcher is able to make a second throw, or it lands beside the F5 and he can get a second shot. If the throw from F2 to the covering fielder doesn't get the out, kill the play. There is no waiting to see what happens, that is absolute in all codes. To better illustrate this think about the BI with R1,R3. The defense calls the play where the SS comes short, F4 covers second. If there is a BI and the SS cuts the ball off, even if he has R3 picked, kill it and enforce the BI.
  5. In a clinic setting and a mask cam, I would suggest finding a fairly easy mount, then have two cameras. That way you can be mounting the on deck umpire.

  7. Not if he isn't going to work HS
  8. When the person in charge thinks the PU should have a foot nailed to the plate, you are fighting an uphill battle. I'm 55, bad knees, sore back, Achilles problem, I'm coming to third., it's my job
  9. Managers need to make their staff understand what running your mouth can cause. I would certainly warn him initially, to give the manager a chance to handle him. He comes screaming out of the dugout, he goes, sorry about the manager's luck.
  10. It is a rule with no penalty, Just don't let him engage without dropping his hands.
  11. Balks are the obvious one for Jrs. Teach them all so runners know what to watch for when taking a lead.
  12. Dont try to teach the whole book. "Went thru' as in provided a few cases/scenarios and moved on...with older umpires they can talk for HOURS about their stories...let's save that talk for the bar I tell them hahaha....Umpires will only get better on what they do OFF the field..all the training in the world is no good without studying and reviewing... Old umpires tell war stories, surely you jest. I would never consider doing that.
  13. My son tells me luge averages about three MPH faster.
  14. Mike, just because you aren't used to having a job that requires you to show up.... I like the NASO over ABUA but I work multiple levels of multiple sports. ABUA is cheaper, NASO covers more. ABUA is certainly good insurance.
  15. I changed the title, if you prefer a different one let me know.
  16. Skeleton is absolutely nuts. When the luge guys shake their heads you know it's bananas.
  17. Sorry to be late to the party. Tack-it works just fine. I use it on my patches for volleyball, no problem. We also use it on state patches in state games. MD has a horribly ugly patch so we don't wear it unless necessary. Velcro and magnets both work fine also.
  18. Love me some curling, even if the US suck

  20. 7.3.5 SITUATION G: With no outs and F1 in the set position, R1, who is on third base, attempts to steal home. F1 legally steps backward off the pitcher's plate and throws home. B2 hits the ball. RULING: Typically, batter's interference is a delayed dead ball in order to give the defense an opportunity to make an out on the initial putout attempt. Since the batter hit the ball, the defense was not afforded an opportunity to make a play. Therefore, the ball is declared dead immediately. R1 is out because of B2's interference. (5-1-2a, 7-3-5, 8-4-2l) Was he saying it was or wasn't illegal?
  21. That's why I took the absolute out of my response, possible but hardly likely. It is one of those things that the blind lady in the parking lot saw for you to call it.
  22. R2, 1 out. R2 stealing 3rd on the pitch, batter hits ball in the air just on foul side of 3B. R2 realizes the ball is in the air and begins to retreat towards 2nd and interferes with F5 going for the fly ball. Very possible that we can get 2 outs on this play. F5 could have made the catch sans INT and (in my judgment) could have doubled up runner We have two requirements as officials: make it safe; make it fair We have two requirements as officials: make it safe; make it fair I understand what you are saying but I see no difference between this play and the R3 interfering. I say get one and rule it foul. First, the F5 probably has to goes a ways to catch it if R2 is doing the interfering, or R2 doesn't have far to retreat. Either way, I doubt the double play is cut and dried and if it isn't then you can only get one.
  23. I didn't see any real advantage it may have given her but she knew it as soon as the whistle blew. Now I'm watching women's curling.
  24. So you are holding your ground and saying there is ABSOLUTELY no way to get two outs on an interference when a fly ball is in foul territory? We have two requirements as officials: make it safe; make it fair Pretty much I am but I typed my post wrong, It should have said,"I wouldn't absolutely say...."
  25. If you have a runner at second, throwing the SS is legal. Runners on first and third, pitcher throws to second, thinking the runner is moving but isn't, is a balk. What I have seen is the pitcher not agreeing with the strike zone, so to shove it up the umpire's butt, throws to an unoccupied base. It is his way to show he is in charge, not the umpire. Warn him, then eject if he does it again. I've seen the same thing where the pitcher makes several needless throws at a slow runner, mostly to disrupt the batter's timing. Pitcher gets ready to pitch and the batter backs out. Pitcher then throws to SS or F5 to make the batter mad. Either way, shut it down.
