Wait, so fans look for reasons to blame the umpires for their team's poor performance? I never knew... Saturday, I had a call at third that I may or may not have blown (I still think I saw the ball on the ground, but anyway). Upshot is, pitcher walks the next two and the batter hits a bases loaded triple with one out. Only one of the runs counted because the team got mercied on the first run that scored. As we're walking off the field, a fan goes, "That was terrible. Just terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible." to me. Literally, my call had zero impact on the game, but it was still my fault!

My problem with FED rules is the "immediate act of making a play" language in 8-4-2c. What does that mean? To me, "immediate act of making a play" starts well before "secure possession" of the ball. What's CSFP?

The only time a runner is protected from a batted ball when he's on the bag is on an IFF. Otherwise, if he gets hit with a batted ball - he's out.

Seeing your first good pickoff really is a terrifying experience... It's like the ball's at first base before you've even turned your head, much less moved your feet. And so naturally, you just make a super-quick call and call him out... Good article.

I agree with the statement, for the most part. I will say 9 times out of 10 the casual fan will notice the bad umpire over the good umpire. But conflating "going unnoticed" with "unwilling to make the tough call" is a mistake in my opinion. I daresay that most games I do, the fans couldn't describe the umpire the next day - because they're not paying any attention to me - because I'm not making mistakes. Now if I go out there and call a horrible game, they'll notice me. Similarly, if I go out there and make an unusual, controversial call, they'll also likely notice me. But how often do we make unusual calls? Mike's 80/20 rule is apropos here. Most games, we're not going to make an unusual call. And most games we're going to get the majority of our calls right. And most games, the casual fan isn't going to notice us at all. And that's good. Because I can tell you when I hear about umpires from my non-umpire friends - it's when they suck. Never do I hear, "yeah we had a game last night and man, was that umpire good." But when they were bad, I can often figure out exactly who it was based on the detailed description they can give me.

Move it up till you think it's enough, and then move it a lot more... And then maybe a touch more? Seriously, I've moved mine further up 3-4 times. Now it's about as far as it will go and it's good.

Yeah, dump them. That was the first thing I did when I got mine. Luckily, they just "velcro off" so it's really easy. By the way, I've worn mine for eight games now. This past weekend it really seemed to start "fitting" much better. I've loosened the shoulder straps and it's not riding up near as much. As far as the neck chafing, I've raised the little "pillow" pad by the throat and when I put it on, I make sure to pull all the cloth up around the neck opening. This seems to help, as now there's something between my neck and the plastic plates.

They don't have one. Yes they do, but for some reason it only comes up with specific search terms. Search for "little league rulebook" and it will come up. Now, it's ridiculously priced at $19.99, so I would not buy it...

Actually in NCAA and (at least) Florida FED, you can have a P/DH - a pitcher who also functions as a DH.

Florida does have it's own P/DH rule for HS. Apparently it's a little different than the NCAA rule. Hopefully this image works...

No, Rolando, it's not the same answer for Florida FED (don't know if any other states use the same rule in FED). Once the P/DH is removed from the mound, he cannot play any other defensive position (check the grey book). Dix - not really seeing where this is clearly covered in the book... Now, using my deductive reasoning, I guess I'm coming up with A if I have to pick one answer, but this doesn't feel right... My reason for choosing A is that, assuming there are less than two outs, we have an IFF. Batter's out, ball's dead when it hits R2, but he's not out.(8-4-2-k.2) If there are two outs, somebody's going to be out due to interference. But, I think I'd call R2 out in this situation. I guess it's kinda moot, because it's the third out so it's really a scorebook only matter, but still. I just don't see how it can be any of the other answers in FED.

Mine too! First high school game ever, so I'm trying really hard to stay calm. It's JV, so I know I've worked much better ball but it's still "the first step", so it's exciting. I've just gotta get unexcited...
