Alright, I'm trying not to be dense here; I really am. What's the difference between a Foul Ball and a Foul Pop Fly? In 2.00, I see Foul Ball and I see Foul Tip. Clearly, this is not - by definition - a Foul Tip. The only mention I see of a Foul Fly is in the definition of a Foul Ball and it doesn't really seem to be delineating it from a Foul Ball, per se. I see a difference between hitting the backstop and being caught. Based on various rules, hitting something other than a defensive player (e.g. a wall, an umpire, an offensive player, the ground) makes a ball not "catchable". But hitting a defensive player seems to be the one exception. Why, in this case, would a ball be "uncatchable" only because it hit a defensive player?

But why can't it be caught for an out? What if you had a foul fly that tipped off one fielders glove and was caught by another fielder. Is that an out?

Great, great line... It's one thing if you're doing the best you can, but it's another to continue in your mediocrity when you know better - like we see with so many guys out there.

Dropping your hat is actually the mechanic we've been taught at the LL clinics. I personally wouldn't use the DDB signal because if everyone returns after the pitch, it's not a dead ball. Why kill it over nothing, when I could just pick my hat or signal flag up?

I don't follow your logic... An Infield Fly is a fly ball "which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort". Just because the fielders don't move doesn't mean it's not an infield fly. It sounds to me like they weren't displaying ordinary effort...

That's why I'm glad there aren't 75 high-def cameras on the games I work... I'm sure I've called that pitch at some point, but nobody has a replay to show exactly where it was... As for the check swing, it was pretty funny - both the catcher and batter were asking for an appeal...

Tag the BR before or after he reaches 1B? If before, then no run scores because, "A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base..." (4.09 OBR) Don't get confused by the tag - if the 3rd out could have been recorded by a fielder standing on a base with the ball (e.g. a Force Play), no run can score.

That is correct for LL. I know because I blew this one... Even with runners on, I'm nullifying the illegal pitch and warning the base coach (4.06(3) LL).

Maybe it's just me, but this makes perfect sense. I know as a LL coach, we see more "variation" in our umpires than in the Majors, but I know the tendencies of most of the regular umpires and try to communicate those to the girls. I don't have K/BB ratios or anything, but if I know one guys going to ring them up on a low and outside pitch, I tell them they've got to protect that corner. If I know a guy's going to call them at the chin, with 2 strikes they better be swinging up there. I feel like that's part of a coach's job, adjust to the umpire's zone...

Run doesn't count because the third out was a force out. Even though the runner was tagged, he was still force to advance, thus it's a force out.

Coach a season, you'll become inoculated to it... Seriously, I've had pitchers complain about it (on my team) but it's only when they're struggling. Kind of like when a baseball pitcher is struggling, there's something wrong with the mound. As an umpire, unless another team complains, I let it go.

But is it a strict timing play? 7.12 (OBR) says, Since this is an appeal on the BR, wouldn't all runs count?

No, this is a DDB, since the runners can advance at their own risk.

Where is the rule for this in LL? I had heard this on HS, etc, but wasn't sure if this applie to LL too as I don't recall seeing this anywhere in the book. Thanks! EDIT: Nevermind. A more careful reading of the rules shows that "Manager" is always the word used when referring to meetings and discussions with the umpires. You strictly enforce this in LL?

The runner has the right to the base line. So if he is obstructed - intentional or not - by F3, who is not fielding a batted ball, it is obstruction.

I like the play by play guy saying how the trailing runner is "automatically out"...
