Absolutely a quick pitch. 8.05(e). If I thought this was done unintentionally because the pitcher was young and wasn't paying attention, I'd probably come up with a, "No Pitch". Since this is Jrs. or Srs, they should know better and they were obviously ticked off, so yeah, I'm gonna burn them with a balk. As for the automatic walk, JR/SR Softball allowed this up until the LL Congress in February. As of now, no LL allows this.

I'm almost certain FED would not address this, so it's got to be a local rule - you'll have to check with the individual league...

Baseball or softball? In most baseball leagues, leaving early is a moot issue because the runners are allowed to lead off. In softball, it's a, "No Pitch. Runner's out for leaving early."

Not to sound sarcastic (cause I honestly don't mean it this way) but if he threw it to first, he must have secured possession in his hand. I agree that for purposes of a force at second (for instance), a chicken-wing catch would not be a catch, but for the OP, it works.

For those of you saying there should be base awards for detached equipment, where are you getting that? If there's a hat laying on the ground, and a ball touches it, there's no way I'm awarding bases - unless it was thrown at the ball...

Well, chalk this thread up as directly helping me avoid a bad call tonight. I was BU on a Sr. LL game tonight and the VT tried this out of a mound visit. I didn't play along... Coach wasn't too happy, but oh well... For a newer umpire like myself, it felt pretty daggone good to come up 100% confident on a tricky situation. Thanks guys!

This would put you outside the catcher, right? As in batter's to the left of the plate, catcher to his right and then you to the catcher's right. Am I seeing this correctly? I don't think I've ever heard of this. I bet you do feel exposed...

I'm assuming you're talking LL rules because that's the only one I know that specifies he can run until he enters the dugout. However, even on LL, a runner can be called out for abandoning the baseline, per 7.08(a)(2). Two separate rules here, which shouldn't be conflated. Dropped third strike is 6.09(. LL says they can run until they enter dead ball territory. ORB says they can run until they leave the dirt circle surrounding home plate, but they're both the same on 7.08(a)(2)

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by protest... If R3 doesn't tag up and scores before R2 is called out on the appeal, then the only way R3's run doesn't count is if the defense appeals. Which would be done by tagging the runner or 3rd base. This appeal can only happen before all the defensive players leave fair territory, since the play ends the half inning. There's no protest here though. A protest would be the defense disagreeing with the umpire's application of the rules. Failure of a runner to tag is not a protest situation.

7.10 OBR Any appeal under this rule must be made before the next pitch, or any play or attempted play. If the violation occurs during a play which ends a half-inning, the appeal must be made before the defensive team leaves the field.

In this situation, would you wait until the defense left the field before using the "Score that run, that run scores" mechanic?

I think this "D" position is just a slightly shifted C, not what I would call D, which is on the 3rd base line. With a runner on 3rd, I might shift a little that way, but I would still call it C.

Same count? Doesn't a batter get a ball for a balk or no?

I thought he was one of our better umpires and apparently does travel, etc. so I thought he would've been ready for it, but apparently not. Hopefully he'll be on it next time. I would say it's the same for softball. If it hadn't been bases loaded, I could have come in further and gotten a better look at it, but I'm assuming this is a call you never "guess", right? I had a pretty good feeling she was in fair territory, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't make the call.

Who's call is this? I had a softball game the other night where the runner got drilled in the back on her way to first. I was in "C", with bases loaded. First play was at home and I wasn't sure where the ball was going to go next, so I couldn't "sell out" to 1st. From my angle, I wasn't positive where the runner was. PU didn't call it and none of the coaches said anything, but after the inning, I asked the PU and he said she was in fair. Is this the BU's call or always the PU?

Got to do this on Saturday... I was supposed to have the plate, but I got hit in the knee that morning and couldn't do it. My partner took the plate but was wearing those "sport pants" so no belt. He's said, you hold onto the balls... Kind of weird, running around the bases with a bag full of balls. Especially when later in the game he started keeping balls in his pocket. Poor pitcher didn't know who to turn to for a ball... And yes, I also got to keep an indicator in the field - which I guess was a good thing, since he lost the count 3-4 times... On another side note - I'm looking to buy a new ball bag. Any suggestions? I do softball and baseball and the one I have now is really tight with two softballs in it...

I've been using the scrubbing bubbles this season too. Love it! I've been using pledge instead of hair spray; might try that when my can runs out. Only problem I've had is cleaning my NB 995 base shoes. If the ground is the least bit wet, they pick up a ton of dirt in the sole, which I can't seem to brush out. Then when I wipe them down, it tends to spread a little to the top of the shoe... So I end up having to wipe them down again the next day. Anybody else have this problem?
