I got the extra padding and made my Large All Star skull call into a M/L by using one medium and one large pad. Works great! The helmets are the same size, it's the padding that's different. Smaller sizes are lucky, they have thicker padding.

I’ve done that (bought medium pads from AS) and while it’s tighter, my hair ends up causing the helmet to slip in the back. I’ve played around with a frankenstein system of medium and large pads and that has partially fixed it, although i still prefer a hat.

Gotcha.  Each to their own of course. Ultimately, you have to do what works best for your situation.

Not to toot our own horn, but this is why the Mirage12 has the dramatically extended chin guard that it does. It was designed and implemented for us (umpires) in mind. 

Same theme needs to be applied here to hardhats / helmets. 
… then shinguards. 
 

… then perhaps somebody could improve plate shoes… you know, for us. 
 

Again, where’s the Big YelloW Slug? How about, instead of paying millions of $$$ to exclude all others logos and marks, you put those millions into D&D’ing an actual hardhat for us??? Hmm??
