I got the extra padding and made my Large All Star skull call into a M/L by using one medium and one large pad. Works great! The helmets are the same size, it's the padding that's different. Smaller sizes are lucky, they have thicker padding.

I’ve done that (bought medium pads from AS) and while it’s tighter, my hair ends up causing the helmet to slip in the back. I’ve played around with a frankenstein system of medium and large pads and that has partially fixed it, although i still prefer a hat.

Gotcha.  Each to their own of course. Ultimately, you have to do what works best for your situation.
