Why on earth would anyone tempt fate like that?

Everyone knows the boys don't react well to impacts!

Yinz's timing is off... Making an assumption without knowing everything.... You don't know if he has any boys to protect. 😁

I'm a bit smaller than that and don't want you to go through that hassle just for me to wear shoes too loose like that but thank you!

Sentiment remains the same.

I took a varsity fastball directly off the toe of my plate shoes two years ago. It was not fun. Every piece of gear for umpires is there for a reason. At a bare minimum, do as @Richvee suggests and go with black steel toe work shoes/boots, but plate shoes are not that much more than steel-toed shoes (for example, I got an email today from Honigs saying Mizuno plate shoes are on sale for ~$140).

Boys or no boys, nobody wants to get hit there!

@orangebird – reflective of the levels you’re (now) working, a really good suggestion would be a “sporty” work shoe, with either a steel or composite toe. New Balance, Skechers, and Reebok all come to mind.
The New Balance 589 Work Shoe, for example:

They’re all over eBay, in a variety of sizes and colors. They’ve become a lot more popular in the “warehouse industry” (think: Amazon) where you’re on your feet for hours at a time, but cannot afford to have a box or pallet or whatever crunch your toes.

And, less fussy than bonafide plate shoes, as far as “keeping clean and polished!”. When you’re doing 11U, on a sandpit, where you actually consider wearing a respirator because of all the kicked-up dust, there is no reason to ever polish your shoes.
