So it’s a ground-rule double?

Batted ball leaving the field of play not in flight

So Carapazza's first call was right, as was my thought in my original OP until I got wrapped around the axle. NY then told him 2B was right but it was because Diaz had reached 1B and gets 2B because of one base after the possession?

I have been reading a lot about this play, and I had a question. Why wouldn't 5.05(a)(6) apply here?

5.05  When the Batter Becomes a Runner

(a) The batter becomes a runner when:

 (6)  A fair ball, after touching the ground, bounds into the stands, or passes through, over or under a fence, or through or under a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery, or vines on the fence, in which case the batter and the runners shall be entitled to advance two bases;

Diaz was the batter, and the ball went over the fence after touching the ground.

At the end of the day, it is six of one and a half dozen of the other. I'm not sure a 1 base award is proper here, based on the rule itself. Two bases from time of throw wouldn't be proper here because possession was never established.

It does, but he hadn't gone past first base when the ball went over the fence so he gets two (first and second).   Look at Velho's video link around 7:00 in.   They have a nice split screen though you can see it in the wide angle shot immediately preceding.

I'm fine with a ground rule double call here...But then why was NY replaying and syncing up F9 falling over the wall with BR's touch of 1B for 13 minutes? Looked like a lot more than a rules review going on in NY

Ehh … not rewriting, but trying to apply what we have as best as possible.  I can live with the decision in the moment, but under scrutiny, it is not the best choice.  No, by the book there isn’t a perfect answer.

Shortstops don’t deflect balls to first base for put outs.

They catch them for put outs though. 😁

What do you mean by this in relevance to this conversation?

5.05(a)(6) is one of the automatic double rules, so the batter and runner advance two bases from the time of pitch. I was pointing out that this rule seems to be written purposely as a catchall, as it makes no mention of how or why the ball went over the fence, just that it did. The other rules being discussed only apply in very particular circumstances, maybe when they didn't want 5.05(a)(6) to apply?

That fielding a ground ball is apparently a deflection by the claim in this conversation.

A ball has 3 states... Pitched, batted, and thrown. Shortstops field a batted ball and then throw it to first base. I'm still not sure what path you are on here.

And all can be deflected or "possessed". But how can a possessed ball be deflected?
