Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 1123 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

If they aren't falling apart, they are doing it wrong.

We live in a digital age.

NFHS still relies – almost exclusively – upon printed rulebooks. If you’ve got a widening shortfall gap of competently trained umpires, with most aging out, and you find yourself unable to “reach & teach” the latest generations…

… maybe you should change the materials and methods of teaching.

Instead of writing all these casebooks, how about actually having an app that has example videos? 🧐 Huh! Wouldn’t that be something helpful??

We are going really off topic. To the point of the topic That was an obvious violation of the Federation rules in the OP. To the younger guys and us old folks that have gone digital, don’t drop your device in the toilet. I would have to say if your first encounter is to thumb though a paper version of the book you will find it much easier to peruse or search electronic versions later.

Agreed.  I can't tell you how many times I was looking up a rule in the book and accidentally discovered the answer to some other question that had been bugging me.  Just doing a search for some term to help with the original question would not have led to that serendipity.

Now, @MadMax, NFHS offers us a FREE APP!

Did I forget to mention that the free app is now the ONLY place to get digital books.  Oh, and that you have to pay for each book?  Oh, and you only get to "borrow" that book for one year (not own it).

But the APP IS FREE!!!!!

Edit: Changing all that to blue.

Admittedly, although I prefer physical copies, I liked the Kindle versions.  I could do quick searches, read them on any device (they synced across my phone, laptop, and tablet), and they were mine when I bought them.  Oh, but we can't have that ... so now you cannot get them that way.  Use our free app and FU, PAY ME!

My second choice is a PDF.  Oh yeah, screw you, you can't get it that way either.

Nowadays I will typically use my Kindle version (2020 was NFHS's last one) to do searches and to use for copying citations ... but then will go look at that section in the newest print version so I have the most up-to-date iteration.

Heck, even USA Softball has gone to disseminating a free PDF.  Granted, they gave you a book when you registered, but they used to charge $15 for the book or their lousy app.  It's kind of odd that we would ... you know ... want umpires to have easy access to all the information we expect them to have.

Broken record: Another knock on relying so heavily on case plays to supersede your rules ... BUY them.  No, sir.  If they were meant to be a part of your expectation, then you should be making sure I have the information you want me to use to call your game.

How many members of the NFHS Baseball rules committee does it take to change a light bulb?

Change?????
