18U, R3, 2 outs, I'm BU.  Slow ground ball to 3B who throws a wide of first.  6'-3" 1B has no problem doing the splits stretching for the ball, has his foot on the bag and makes a really nice catch and in my judgement maintains possession of the ball more than long enough (the throw was not in the dirt).  As he regains his balance getting up the ball pops out of his glove but to me he was deliberately flipping it to himself.  Of course the HC didn't see it that way and wanted me to get help.  I told him I didn't need it since I was in perfect position and had a great angle on the play and told him exactly what I had.  Again, he asks why can't I just ask and again I said I didn't need it so let's move on.  He grumbles a bit but leaves with no trouble the rest of the game.  I'd like to know how many of you appease coaches by going to your partner or do you do like I did and stick to your guns. Thanks.

If you're 100% sure of your call and your partner isn't giving you "let's talk" signal, then stick to your guns.

If I'm 100% sure on my call... There is absolutely no need to get together. Question for you. Did you wait until the voluntary release of the ball by F3 before signaling? Did you give the transfer mechanic as well?

What was the DHC's specific question? That might change things for me. If he asked about a pulled foot I most likely would go depending on where I started and if my partner could be counted on to be paying attention. If he was asking about the ball being dropped I'd be much less inclined to ask for help.

BTW, it's definitely a had to be there call but if I had a ball drop after what I thought was voluntary release, I'm coming up big with the pull out of the glove signal and, "He's out, he's pulling it out, he's out!"

I won't/don't get help just to appease a coach.

I won't/don't get help on a pure judgment call.

If the coach is arguing that I missed something, like a pulled foot, swipe tag or dropped ball, then I will look to my partner.

Yes and yes and I hammered out, out , out three more times.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm always amused when a coach asks an ump, who is right on top of a play and makes a judgment call, to get help--from a partner who is 90, 100, 120 feet away. Or, even worse, goes directly to the partner!

Then he was just fishing for a call...

This. Prevent the fishing expedition before it starts.

This is something I need to get better at and have been working to do better ...

Ask the coach specifically what it is he is asking you to get help on.  Do not just “go for help” on the play in general.

Coach now has a few limited options: ask for help because something happened that he feels you did/could not see (e.g., pulled foot) OR ask for help because he doesn’t like your judgment call (e.g., the drop was on the transfer).

In one case he is asking you to go for more information ... no real reason not to.

In the other case he doesn’t like your judgment call ... too bad.

Essentially, do not let them fish for calls.
