New Pitcher During Warm-Up Pitches?

Had this come up in a FED game yesterday. 

Fourth or fifth inning, the starting pitcher comes out to the mound and throws one warm up pitch. Coach then comes out and decides he wants to change pitchers, bringing in F6 to pitch. Having pitched three or four innings already, does the starting pitcher still have to face one batter after throwing a warm-up pitch? OBR?

Not in FED. In NCAA and OBR if they cross the foul line they have to pitch to one batter.

Right -- and in FED, the new pitcher gets one fewer warm-ups (or the current F1 cannot return to pitch for the rest of the game =-- which might not be that severe of a penalty).

Why does he get 1 less?
The rule says if the new pitcher exceeds 8 the prior pitcher can not return.

But the starter took one of the eight.  I think there's an interp on this.  I might be wrong.

The sub has to pitch to at least one batter. This rule aims to prevent spurious subs at F1 that waste time warming up and then not facing a batter. 3-1-2

I don't find anything that would diminish the number of warm up pitches a proper substitute may take. Someone will ask whether the starting F1 can throw 8 warmups (in an inning ≠ 1) and then a sub come in and throw 8 more. Alas, I don't see anything to prohibit that.

As far as pitches, he may not take more than required. If he does he may also not return to pitch. 3.1.2B
