Chest protector Modifications

I have a Champion Body Armour CP that i use and it does a good job except that the shoulder cups shift around under my shirt and have left me a little vulnerable to shoulder shots.  Has anyone used this CP and what modification could/ should i do to help with this?

@Storm13, I wear the Champion P210, 15", and trust it completely. I would look at your shoulder width and see if the CP is too wide for you. I originally had a Wilson Platnium and I was getting hammered up under the shoulder caps because it was too wide for my frame. I sold it and bought a Douglas which fits me perfectly. I later bought a second Douglas and the CHampion P210. If it fits you across the shoulders than I would look at replacing the stock harness. It may be allowing the CP to slide too much forward. I just bought one of @Razzor harness and it tightened up the CP to perfection. It is as good as the deltaflex and has longer straps to fit a 15" CP with no problems.

Sorry to beat a dead horse here but does anyone have an idea that could help me with the shoulder cup problem on this chest protector (other than buy a new one).  I am willing to modify it some but am not very experienced at creating things.

@Storm13, give me the exact model of Champion CP you own (a pic might help, too, but if I know the model, that should suffice), and I'll figure out something.

So you're finding that the shoulder pauldrons (the caps at the ends) keep floating and shifting, huh?

@Storm13 The upgrade harness will help because it can get a tighter more even pull on the caps over your shoulders. Perhaps a smaller tighter fitting shirt would help hold them in place. If you have a huge amount of movement, again read my original response above. Measure the CP and your shoulders and see what the difference is. Again my original platnium was way too big for my shoulders and was getting me hit. After measuring and understanding it was too wide for me, I started checking around and found that the Douglas had the closest fit to my shoulders and bought one, loved it so much I bought a second one. See the Force 3 with "adjustable" shoulder caps. One is for sale in the buy, sell forum at a great price.

Where did you get it? I've googled umplife and can't find a site that sells the harness. I want to put a different one on my Champion P210. Good protector, lousy harness.

Huh. That's a decently-performing and good value CP. The outer carapace and the composition of the pads should give it enough structure so the shoulders aren't flopping around. You're probably experiencing the "shop apron" effect that plagues many umpires who aren't wearing pre-curved rigs (such as the All-Star System 7) or have taken the time to curve them with guidance (you have to know what you're doing when performing this).

You'll want to take @midtnump and @ChrisUrbz 's advice on the harness. I would normally say get a DeltaFlex, but given that @Razzer makes 'em longer, better and customized, purchase one from him. You'll want the 4-strap unit, not the 3-strap. The goal is to curve and arch the shoulder plates over your shoulders. It looks like the ailettes are already curved, and the pauldrons are cupped. What ends up happening, though, is then when we hunch over in our stance, the CP pitches forward and start sliding down. Straighten up, and it stays down. The billow – that pad at the throat – should stay at your Adam's Apple. So, with a Flex-like harness, tightened up, the entire CP should stay in place. If the shoulder plates are too stiff and flat, let me know, and I'll advise you through shaping them (uses a heat gun). Once they're curved, that harness will surely hold them.

Give that a go... If the pauldrons are still moving about on you, I'll come up with another plan.

@MadMax and @ChrisUrbz I got a new harness from @Razzer about a week ago and have been busy with my full time job but plan to get it on this evening to try it out.  As for shaping the plates, I have not done any modifications to the CP so far but would love to get it fitting the best I can.  Thank you all for the advice and have a great day.

Ok...so I have had the new harness on my Champion P210 for a couple months now and it really helped.  now I am tending to have the padding around the neck floating up and choking me.  Has anyone removed that part or modified it to keep it from being right on their throat/Adam's apple?

I cut it off mine. Stay away from the body pad seam and the rest can be removed.

@Storm13, you may have the new harness too tight. Let off the tension on the two upper straps, leaving the snugness on the torso straps. This way, it will rest gently on your shoulders instead of pulling back and throttling you. The billow (that neck pad you're talking about) should be at the Adam's apple, so it's right where it needs to be, but certainly should not be choking you.
