Fair enough... We will have to agree to disagree. Too many come on here, ask questions to scenarios, and become defensive when they don't get the answer they want to hear. I felt this was a valid case.

I understand where you're coming from, trust me I do. I just feel it was more out of 'justification' of what was done, not so much belittling.

I've listened to partner "stress" sportsmanship and I always think, that a waste of breathe. Nothing said at a plate meeting is going to change who these players and coaches are or how they'll behave.

Best sportsmanship line I've heard, "I am required by my chapter to mention sportsmanship ...I just did".

You're lucky you are not really in NJ.  We have to read a speech before every HS contest, every sport, every level.

As a matter of fact we just got word yesterday from the sanctioning body of the IHSA Rules Committee.  They said as long as they don't use them to warm their bats it's legal (we already knew that).  The question posed to the IHSA was they were using PORTABLE heaters in their dugout which wasn't case, they were professionally installed radiant heaters located on the ceiling of their dugout.

We totally understood you don't go looking for trouble since the game is hard enough.  I'm not sure how to put this in the age of political correctness but nobody on this forum was there except my partner and the teams involved.  We made a judgement call (good or bad) based on the SPORTSMANSHIP of the game at the HS LEVEL that we stress to both head coaches before each game. When we asked if he could turn them off he had no problem and did so right away. I'm not kidding when I say the wind was blowing 25-30mph with gusts up to 50mph and a game time temp of 41, you do the math on the windchill.  When the snow/sleet/ice balls started blowing horizontal we stopped the game for safety reasons in the 3rd inning.

I think we all beat this topic to death enough.  I thank everyone for their posts and always look forward to reading everyone's situations.

Have a great season everyone.

Did you ever notice that the home team usually has the shady dugout?

Al, please give it a rest.  I get it.  Do you think anybody likes to have their sentences picked apart and deciphered to no end.

I'll be back to just reading again.

Have a nice day.

I've come out of hibernation since I actually got a game in last night.  I'm not even sure the point of the thread.  Is it to get feedback from the other people here or just to tell a story?  You seem to have ruled, think you're right, and aren't interested in feedback.  Then when you get pushback, you decide it's time to go back to lurking mode.  I hope your skin is thicker on the field.

BTW, you are the only one I see in this thread who thinks this in unsportsmanlike or an issue umpires should be involved with.  Home teams frequently have bigger, nicer, better appointed dugouts.  When it's you against the world, back the world.

I know how I'd handle it.  If it was really, really cold, I'd go warm my hands in that dugout between innings.  Maybe roast a marshmallow during pitching changes, too.

Wait a minute here - I plan to hijack this thread, now.

It's "When it's you against the world, take the world AND the points."  And I'm SURE I've used that here before.  I'll take PayPal for the royalty fee, thanks.  :D

I've been using this phrase since the 20th century.  First person I saw use it was an umpire friend in Dallas, who was a heckuva umpire before he got too busy to keep doing it.

I had nothing better to do last night, and searched U-E for that phrase.  (When I say I had nothing better to do, I had Nothing.  Better.  To.  Do.  For reals.)  Turns out, I used it in a thread with "umpire scott," for those that remember him, in about 2012 or 2013.

I don't know that I used it all the way back in the last century, and I can't imagine I've typed it anywhere, but it's been a favorite phrase of mine for a while.

It's suddenly dawned on me that, apparently, I have nothing better to do tonight, too.
