In all honesty, I have no problem if you want to show a repay of a pitch and put the box up for that...But can we please watch the game live without the box ?

I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to watch games on ESPN. ....The white box, the dots after every pitch, announcers who's sole  purpose seems to be pointing out every time an umpire's ball/strike call disagrees with the "holier than thou" K zone, instead of actually announcing a game.....add it all up an watching a game on ESPN is NOT and enjoyable event for me anymore.

I read some pretty scathing articles when ESPN first introduced that stupid box.  Common sense has yet to prevail on this one.

EVERY single one of us has days where you just don't seem settled and dialed in ...it's human nature.  Some of the responses and graphs posted seem to think it wasn't that bad.   Isn't Danley known for a more open zone? (I may be wrong on that) ....

That's pretty much my point -- if that was a bad day for Danley, I feel better about my bad days and inconsistencies.  Believe me, I wasn't coming at this feeling superior, just that if an MLB ump can have a day like his, I feel much better about myself given the level I'm at.

What better way to see exactly what you're missing and what areas you need to tighten up, expand, etc.

Me too Rich...I'd pay money to get my zone charted by the computer so I could see my evaluation.  First off, I think mine would be pretty good.  I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I do have confidence in my zone.  I think that my work would be pretty comparable to a MLB umpire...especially considering the pitchers and catchers I work with compared to the ones they work with.  I've been fortunate enough to meet several MLB guys and they all say that the only difference in us and them is that their calls are on ESPN.  We all have whackers that we get right, and we all have high tags and butchered pitches that we miss.  It is OK to say that a big leaguer kicked one every now and then, but you can't question their integrity or book of work.  Just as it exists in all professions, there are some who excel in different aspects of the job, but they wouldn't be there if they sucked!

I'm of like mind @Richvee - I've heard umpires say slow motion replay has ruined baseball (Even before IR was instituted) but you gotta think that being able to pin down exactly what calls have been getting missed has improved umpiring as a whole. e.g positioning has been taught better.

I'd love to see not only my balls/strikes charted, but all my close calls in slow motion. See where to improve and what I could be doing better.

I've been saying this for years. If an umpire calls off the plate he has a big zone. If he doesn't he has a tight zone. Go figure.

Rob Drake, at the beginning of clinic this past winter said to us, "There's probably guys in here better than I am. It's just that I pursued it as a career, caught a few breaks and was in the right place at the right time."

I agree, Rich.  It was supposed to have been a sarcastic comment.  You're right.  I probably wouldn't like the looks of them, but they would, indeed, be a great learning tool!

Got it. My sarcasm detector must be on the fritz. :D

One thing's for sure. If I had a few games charted, got to look at the data and then had a few more charted, I'm sure the 2nd group of charts would show improvement.

Being humble is a positive trait...especially at a clinic.  

He doesn't need to walk in there and tell everybody how good he is.

Exactly. He was approachable and great to learn from...And I did learn things, but by far, the best was his impersonation of Joe West making a call at 2nd base. He was discussing timing on calls at the bases, and said "Watch Joe around 2nd when he has a call to make" and he proceeded to do the Joe West "waddle"  around the bag to make sure the fielder had the ball before calling the out... Spot on.... I guess that comes from working with him day in day out all season. .
