Went down to Emperald Isle, nc to work wood bat tournment.. Had 13 games over 3 days. Last game, championship game for middle or lower bracket !2u. Visiting team loosing 4-10 bottom of 3rd inning. Runner on third, pitcher balks. Home team yells balk about same time my partner, who is working bases balks pitcher. Visiting coach comes unglued. Comes running on the field, he almost at pitchers mount by the time I could call time. I tell him to get back to his dugout area. He is yelling and jumping up and down, I tell him that is enough, balks are judgement calls, he says we let other team call balk. I tell him that play is over, time to play ball coach..Well he still wouldn't be quiet and tries to come back  towards me  at home plate area. I tell him, Coach that is your warning, one more word and your gone. He lets out a big scream, and turns and kicks dugout fence and then turns towards me and spits at me.  Thats it coach, your gone. God you got to love it. First time I had a coach spit at me

"one more word and your gone"    Wrong phrase,  "That's enough coach" is much better..  BUT, the fact that he ran onto the field without being granted  time and putting on a monkey display and he'd be gone without the need for any warning.

I agree with that. Coach committed 3 ejectable offenses before he was warned.

  1. "Comes running on the field"
  2. "Yelling and jumping up and down"
  3. "Still wouldn't be quiet"

I get being a good soldier at the tournament, but nobody should have to tolerate such jackassery.

Why?  He's the one that's leaving...  You leave and he's not only got your goat but the game is essentially over.  Why punish the others?

I'm guessing that the offender spat toward the umpire and not on him.

Spitting on someone is criminal battery in many states. That would be one reason to stop the game (or at least suspend it).

The objective is to apprehend and punish the perpetrator of a crime, even at the risk of delaying or ending a baseball game. The lesson might be more valuable to the kids than the continuation of the game (which would teach its own lesson).

I'm leaving also and finding a good hot shower!

After I get him arrested.

The adult league I work in last year I think had a player spit on umpire, the whole team was thrown out of the league.

I'd have a very hard time controlling myself and not making sure the next thing the spitter was able to spit wouldn't be his own teeth like chiclets. Just sayin'

Had a few games where the coach was arguing, and carrying on, I would look at my mask(HSM) and ask myself "would I be able to knock ALL his teeth out?"

I had this coach in semi final game and I told my partner, this coach is crazy. He was the most jacked up hyper coach I had ever seen. He won the semi final game . I told my partner before the last game he was going to come unglued at some point, sure enough he did.

Funny how you can spot them after a while. I was a spectator at a 9&10YO state LL tourney.  Told the wife in the 1st inning that the third base coach for the one team was most likely to get EJ'd.  One inning later "WHOOSH" he was gone.  Body language, I could read it on the calls that didn't go his way.  He got booted for arguing balls and strikes.

Great example for young men.

Better example/visual is when he is being loaded in the back of an ambulance.

Lasting impression on the young men.

I am in a cranky mood today

@BigUmpire

Jack, you really are my hero. My sentiments exactly. Leaving in the back of an ambulance would leave a lasting impression on the young lads he's charged with leading wouldn't it? Well said.

The loss of respect of a uniformed authority figure, like an umpire, is a bad thing for young people.

Never say "one more word"

can you explain why to a n00b please ?

So it's worth losing your job and probably going to jail for some salvia?  That sets a good example for the players, parents and public to respect the position.  You know there would a spectator that would get it on video, post it to the web, go viral and you would have more trouble than you ever bargain for.  Not saying your action would not be justified in my view, however, this is the world we live in.

I was a trial attorney and a prosecutor for 15 years. There are certain actions that justify certain other actions.  I'd take my chances that a jury where I reside would do the right thing. Every umpire I personally know in my neck of the woods would not accept being treated like that without retribution. I don't know what kind of people live where you live but I think the majority of people here would think I was justified. That includes law enforcement and prosecutors. I probably wouldn't even be charged. And one more thing. I am the guy who has absolutely nothing to lose financially. I gave it all to my ex wife. I don't own anything of significant value and I owe for what I do have. We call it being judgment proof.

Im actually a very dangerous guy when you think about it.

This question deserves an answer. We don't say "not one more word" because we don't mean it. Coaches are permitted to speak, even after they have been warned. The simply may not persist in whatever behavior prompted the warning.

So if they say something permissible and we've said "not one more word," we're in a dilemma. We either allow the word and make the warning meaningless, or we eject for a permissible comment.

With the condition "Not another word"  You've painted them into a corner that they will breach..  They will say "word" just to see what you do...What if they say "Thank you"?  You going to toss them for that?  It was another word after all.

Instead, put both hands up in a stop motion and say "That's enough coach", "Let's get on with the game".  This implies that this was enough for this particular call and ranting..You've left them room for redemption.  Most will calm down.

For you "gentlemen" implying violence...what message does that send to the young players?

No violence for me, I like to think that I'm a little smarter than that.  Not even in self defense when I'm wearing the blue...

Keep your attorney's number on speed dial and we'll see just how "judgement proof" the coach is...

Justified to knock a guys teeth out for that.  ok, good luck, I hope you never have to find out.  By the way.... you have something of great value to take away, you're ability to earn a living and your freedom.....  over some dumbass at a youth baseball game...

Thank you Maven - that makes great sense.  I would interpret the "not one more word" from a umpire to be directed at the topic that was being argued and not literally, however, I certainly understand not everyone would have such interpretation.
