GD dark gray slacks vs. Honigs ultimate slacks

I need to get some new slacks this year (both plate and base) and would like some input between the Gerry Davis slacks and the Honigs ultimate slacks that now come in plate and base versions. Has anyone bought the new Honigs slacks? How do GD slacks hold up over the course of the season (100+ games)?

i am starting my 3rd season with my gd pants. holding up very well. nevere had any honigs pants so can't compare.

If you want pants to last. Have not worn the ultimates but they are not as good as poly-wools.

I had GD. They were nice and light and looked okay but did not wear well for me. The picked a couple places. Whatever you do, do NOT get combos. They suck for both plate and bases.

For sure wasn't thinking about combos, I like to have separate pants that fit each application, not a compromise between plate and base slacks. I knew it was only a matter of time before the poly-wools came up, and I think I will end up just spending the extra to get them. BUT, do the poly-wool slacks have to be dry cleaned every time I wash them or can I run them through the washer and hang dry them?

I thought I read that you could cold rinse them, dry them slightly and then hang them to finish drying but I don't have any yet, hopefully I am getting Dave's, so Dave would be the one to ask. He is the expert on the poly-wools.

As Mike said, you can wash them cold water, drip dry, cool iron or low heat mild tumble in a dryer and touch up with an iron. Remember that with wool, a high heat will make the wool shine and with nylon/polyester a high heat will melt the material or make it shiny as well. If you must wash and iron then put a thin cloth like a pillow case or t-shirt over the pants and iron through the cloth layer and the pants.

I have the Honigs Poly Wools and use a Dryel bag on mine.. I will wah them in cold water, and drip dry and place them in a dryel bag its works like a dry cleaner bag.. I have had them a year now and no problems.

I have now worn the poly/wool from Honigs for the bases and plate (seperate pair). Guys, yes they are expensive, but dont ride up and feel great even in the Miami heat....

I use the GD combos, and they work great for me behind the plate. I'm tall, fairly thin, and wear really low profile shin guards most of the time. They don't work with my gray WV shins. So it really depends on your build and the gear you use.

The GD aren't as good looking as the Honig's. But they're really comfortable, with that elastic waistband, and wash nicely. It's a compromise.

I dont know what all the complaining is... Here in LA, when it rained two weeks ago, it only got down to the mid 50s. Its supposed to be beautiful this weekend (Im saying this as I am looking at the sunshine through the front screen door) and should top out at 76 for my game tomorrow. Looking at low to mid 70s for the next week or two.

Anyways, here in LA, Honigs is the norm. They are close by which explains why that is to some extent but if they were POSs then why would everyone have them. Poly-wools are now the only pants I plan to EVER wear since it sounds like HS will be going to the charcoal color soon. I have a pair of heather grey pants just incase but its poly-wools if I have the choice.

Up here in Portland, Honigs is also the norm due to northwest HQ being in Salem (about a 20 minute drive). I miss the 70 degree days from when I lived in socal, it snowed here yesterday. Unfortunately the poly-wool base slacks in my size are backordered for a while, and my season starts soon. So, I think I will order the poly-wool plate slacks and try the new ultimate base slacks that are also charcoal gray.

Man, now the base slacks are not expected to be delivered until early March what now? I guess my old slacks will have to do for the first few weeks of the season.

Got to do what you got to do. Its nice that Im running into all these people from the PDX area. There was once a time when Tim_C was the only one. Now there is you and Widac as well. Do you guys work in the same association?

Ive been trying to convince my wife that a move to the PDX/Vancouver area would be a good move for us. My sister and husband already live in the Aloha area.

I really am not sure. The Portland High School Assoc is PBUA. It looks like I won't be doing HS ball this season as I was persuaded to be one of the UIC's at my local little league which means I will be doing lots of work on the small diamond and training new umps. There is a new Junior Big League starting, so I will get to do some 90' foot games. Hopefully I can get back to big boy ball next spring.

makes sense to me. What area you work in? I decided to stop working little kids ball a while back because I found it hard to go back and forth between the pitching and mechanics on the small diamond to the large diamond.

However, with that said I do find myself wishing to go back and work some smaller games just to be able to work with younger umpires.

I am in the PBUA and I am heading out the door now for the mechanics clinic. Also Jordan even if you are not joining the Association this season it would be a good idea to attend the Jim Evans clinic in Tigard next week, 3/6,7 and 8. He hasn't been here since '06 so I rercommend if you've got the time and $195.00 it is worth it for the world class instruction. I'm working with Lake Oswego Little League for the regular season. I also help out with District Four umpire training and work most of the Honors and All-Star tourneys at the district and state level. I really wanted to go to the Jim Evans Clinic this year, but I was forced to get a job in the offseason to help pay for my college and after updating my equipment I just do not have the money to go. After, college I plan on going to the six week school and work my way up the ladder. I will be going to the LL Northwest Clinic in March (the league is paying for it) so if any of you are going I would love to meet you.

I went to the Corvalis clinic in 2007 and loved it. The last day at lunch I bought $10 worth of raffle tickets and walked out with a brand new Honigs K1. Same year, I went to the LL Western Region Junior School and loved that as well. I am taking two of our young guys with me, and hopefully they end up at the Junior school come June.

I thought this whole thing was over, but now I am really mad with Honigs. Three weeks ago when i placed my order, the poly-wools were not in stock in my size, and were not do to be in stock until April. So, I ordered the ultimate plate and ultimate base slacks and the website said I would have them in early March. I finally called them today and asked and they said the ultimates were on backorder and my name was pretty far down the list. And here is the kicker, the poly-wool plate slacks are now in stock in my size the base slacks aren't. So, I think I will cancel my order for the ultimates and buy a pair of poly-wool plate slacks. But, Honigs has no dark grey base slacks in stock and my season is starting what do I do? I am thinking that I may just order a pair of the new dark grey base slacks from Jim Kirk at ump-attire but really want the poly-wools for the bases. I have no idea what to do.

Wow, I feel a lot better now after writing this all down.
