Two weeks ago I was PU in a legion game where the HT F1 was drilled in the chest by a come backer in the top of the second inning. After  a few harrowing minutes, he was able to leave the field under his own power. He went to the hospital and the most serious injury was a baseball shaped bruise (including lace marks) on his chest.

Same field, same F1, same inning, and F1 is drilled with a come backer in his left elbow and the ball ricocheted into right field. Again, he walked off the field under his own power for a visit to the emergency room.

What are the odds?

I had back to back hits bounce off of the front of second base last night into left field.  I've been umpiring 21 years and don't remember any batted ball hitting second base.

Pretty good, since they obviously got their timing down. My only question is how did he continue to pitch after going to the hospital? That's one long-ass inning.

I am guessing that there were 2 separate games but identical events.

He said 2 weeks ago in the first incident.

Right: that's why Matt said it was a long inning.

Why are people trying so hard to make this not funny?

I didn't see the same inning comment and I didn't know it was suppose to be funny?

That day?  1-1.

And it's not that rare.  Think about it:  in everything in life, either something WILL happen, or it WON'T happen.  So life is just a series of 50-50 chances.

<Boom.>       <------ That's the sound of me blowing your mind.

So flipping 500 heads in a row is just as likely as 1 heads? I know 6-year-olds who apparently understand probability better than you do. :(

I have some bets I'm hoping you'll take at even money....

You're right - not everything is a 50-50.

For example:  the percentage chance maven fails to see a post delivered in the same less-than-serious spirit:  100%, evidently.

A few seasons ago, in my last HS regular season game, the third pitch of the game was lined back up the middle, and hit F1 flush in the mouth. I raced to the mound where he stood (yes, STOOD). He was obviously in shock. He opened his mouth and spit blood all over my pants and plate shoes. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and had surgery that night to repair his broken chin and to remove what was left of four broken teeth. Scariest thing I have ever witnessed on a baseball field.

With this being a somewhat common incident, the fast comebacker, when will we see HS mandate that pitchers where a facemask similiar to what you see softball players wear?

It is only a matter of time.

I was working a 14u USABL game last night and I swear the F1 for one team either had great reaction speed or a guardian angel looking after him. Four times in 3 innings a ball was line right back toward his head and he got out of the way all four times. Each time I was sure we were going to be calling an ambulance.

It is only a matter of time.

Hopefully, if protective head gear can become mandatory for pitchers at a young enough age, we'll eventually see it become more prevalent at the major league level. A big problem with it, from what I've seen, is the social stigma attached to wearing a protective device that isn't mandatory, much like catchers wearing hockey style masks. Many catchers I've talked to in 18+ amatuer leagues have said the first thing they do after HS is switch to a traditional mask.
