The comments in that article by people saying things like "You don't know the whole story" and defending this adult are despicable. What the heck is wrong with people??

Thats why you gotta know how to protect yourself, HSM users have an advantage as it is a superior projectile to the traditional mask, I also know how to completly disable an attacker in a few strikes

It's not the people, it's the society we live in.

Minorities almost never get the right representation and the majorities get defended. Obviously it was the 15-year-old's fault otherwise this perfectly sane, law-abiding man would have no reason to assault him and for some reason that makes it not so bad.

This SH*# is F*#King whack.

While I agree it is a society issue, I don't see it as a minority/majority issue. It's the way things are these days. Everything is always someone else's fault. Don't get me started..I could go on and on about accountability, taking responsibility for your own actions and not blaming someone, or something that caused you to do something... It drives me nuts. However, this isn't the place to air my societal  grievances, so I'll stop now.

I think you're being tongue-in-cheek, but in all seriousness, a regular mask would generally be a better offensive weapon.

An old trick....throw your hat (or whatever you have handy) at their face. They'll either duck (anticipate the direction, therefore gaining first strike advantage) or they'll catch/deflect it (occupying their hand/s gaining first strike advantage). I say first strike because once I deem talking is futile and the fkr won't let me walk away, words are useless.

If I had a HSM, I'd put it on and head butt the moron. Best NON-PROJECTILE weapon. And, you still have it in your posession, so it's not a fire and forget missile. Plus, if it's loaded with TWs, you won't suffer any ill effects yourself from the impact! :givebeer:

Now the best are shin guards, you can "clap" them on the guys head from both sides, also your first strike is the groin, then as the attacker falls the eyes, then strike the neck with an elbow pump, boom attacker disabled, again sorry for the tangent

@BaltimoreUmpire - only in the movies

your probably right, although going for the eyes was what they teach in karatefirst strike is nose or throat. Hard enough in the nose, their eyes water up. Hard enough in the throat, they can't breathe. Either way, advantage goes to the first strike.

You mean to tell me this wasn't in Canada and Shameless assaults on officials happen in the USA? It's not even hockey season yet.

This is the first year I haven't been the UIC for the Show Me State Games.  You have no idea how glad I am I resigned.  The parents at these events are insane.

I have some disagreements with the article - the umpire wasn't a volunteer.  He was paid to work.  I'm sure this was included to generate sympathy and anger.  No sympathy or anger needs to be generated...a 15 yr. old was assaulted by an adult.  That's all the sympathy and anger that should be needed.  The incident shouldn't have happened in the parking lot.  The umpires dress and report to the press box at that complex.  We did that to eliminate these sort of things from happening...it's much less likely that some dumbass would physically assault an umpire if he's walking through a crowded walkway to the press box, where one of the officials (tournament director, assistant tournament director, site director, or I) would be able to see them coming our way.

The games are very poorly run from the top down.  I told them several times things like this were going to happen because they refuse to pay adequately enough to attract experienced umpires and not have to resort to using a 15 yr. old who probably had no umpiring experience.  My guess is he was probably a HS baseball player who was told he could make some decent money if he would come out there and supervise for a while on a weekend.  My first year I had umpires showing up in khaki shorts and t-shirts to umpire.  Most had never done it or very little.  Good teams quit coming years ago and they are now left with crappy teams with POS parents who treat every game like it's game 7 of the world series.

I worked the adult division of the 2009 Show-Me State Games with Pete Reiser/MidMo Ump, formerly of this site. He was a HS ump looking to move up and I had just completed my 2nd year of college umpiring. (We met/decided to work together on this site after I contacted him via PM when I moved to KC area)

We had a ball. I do remember some rowdy folks and some bad baseball. However, we kept getting complimented by the participants because of what Jason mentioned- unqualified umpires at most venues. We called ourselves the "Pros From Dover-Old MASH TV show reference). It wasn't all bad. By Sunday the terrible teams had been weeded out and we had some good games. The tournament championship was won with a walk off grand slam by catcher for team sponsored by some Pirate themed bar down on Lake of the Ozarks. Good times. I miss Pete. Never worked them again. Did you assign back then @MidAmUmp ?
