It is never ok to wear shorts.

So if it is never ok to wear shorts... Then Why do they sale them? Just Wondering

I have a pair of combo pants and I never wear them. Too baggy on the bases and too tight behind the plate. I guess I keep them in case my plate pants are ripped or too dirty. Invest in a couple pairs of good plate pants.

I wear my combo pants on the bases.  They don't look baggy on me and I like having a pair that I can wear behind the dish in a pinch.  My shin guards do get snagged in them occasionally.  Some guys I work with only have combo pants.  If your shin guards are low profile and don't get caught, then you may be able to get away with just combo pants.  For me, this doesn't work that well since the combo pants snag my shin guards occasionally.  I have 2 pairs of plate pants and 2 pairs of combos.  My one pair of combos is heather grey in case I have to work with a penny pincher who refused to buy the charcoal.  I would get at least 1 pair of plate pants and either a pair of combos or base pants.  Some guys like combos, some guys don't.

The higher level assigner advised me to get 2 cheap pairs of slacks at kmart, he said "$100 pants arent something needed here" are there really $100 pants? Ps im getting smitty's anyways they cost the same as the cheapest slacks i saw at kmart.com

I'm surprised a reputable "higher level assigner" would advise an umpire that he just needs to get Kmart pants. If you can afford investing in a pair of Honig's polywool pants than I would highly suggest investing in a pair of base and plates. I take pride in my appearance and by wearing a pressed, clean, fitted uniform I gain credibility right off the bat.

I might go with 1 plate, 1 combo because i work the bases so rarley i figure combos will work but still be backups for the plate

Anyone else have an opinion? Are combo pants ok?

Can't stand combo pants. They look like plate pants on the bases. So, no. Spend the little extra money and get the poly wools from Honigs. Much better than the ones from Smitty and will last a long time. It will probably cost you a game fee for the difference. Remember, this is an investment. Spend your money wisely. I've seen people go cheap and it doesn't look good. They get cheap shirts from somewhere, thinking they got a bargain, and the shirts don't match any other's colors. Look the part. Show pride in your uniforms.

Not a good answer. One plate, one base.

I have a Smitty shirt and I much prefer the Honig's shirts to the Smitty's. If you can, I suggest waiting until the black Friday deals and stocking up on Honig's shirts and Polywools, trust me you will not regret it, even if it hurts the bank.

They are fine. If you normally wear an XL on bases you can get away with wearing a large.

Have to agree with the feel of the Honigs shirts. The Honigs shirts run true to size.

You'll have to replace the shirts quicker than the pants. The Honigs poly/wool pants will last a long time. I actually dyed all of mine earlier this summer. I'll buy some new ones later this year. Have had the other ones for about five years. Took them to the cleaners once and have since washed and dried them at home.

Guys, I'm all for looking the part, but....

If a guy is working rec ball with below-shaving age players, polywools are not necessary. That's $130 for two pair of pants. I'm not bashing anyone who works youth rec ball, but it would take several days of working those games just to pay for your pants. A pair of Smitty combos would probably work just fine in most youth rec leagues I've seen.

The higher level assigner advised me to get 2 cheap pairs of slacks at kmart, he said "$100 pants arent something needed here" are there really $100 pants? Ps im getting smitty's anyways they cost the same as the cheapest slacks i saw at kmart.com

Spending money on polywools to work youth rec games is not an "investment". It is an unneeded expense.

Spend your money on a good chest protector and mask and a pair of plate shoes. Save money on cloth uniforms you'll have to replace in a few years anyway. Spend money on polywools after you've umpired for a few years and know you're going to stick around.
