Batter is up at the plate. Hits a pop up down the first base line. As he is running down the first base line the pop up hits him in the head.

Is the batter runner out? Or does he go back to bat?

He's either out or it's a foul ball, depending on where the ball is when it hits him.

It hit him on his head.

I wish people would read the post before responding

What happened to the emoticon?? Damn IPad.

He could also be out if he was hit over foul territory and he hindered a fielder from catching it on the fly.

Not too sure about this interp. which rule are you referencing?

Let's say F3 is camped under the pop up between 1st and home, and 2 feet foul. BR knocks into F3, ball hits BR in the head. That's INT, the fact that the ball actually hit BR is irrelevant.

Are you claiming that the BR's position in either fair or foul territory is not relevant and that getting hit on his head is all you need to know to answer the question?

I say,I say, that was a JOKE, son.

Emoticons suck on an IPad.

The ball hit him in the head as he was running to first base. So once he started running to first base hasn't he established a base path?

I quite agree with this, but it's an entirely different situation than a BR unintentionally being struck by a fly ball in foul territory.

Ok. We're on the same page.

Base path is irrelevant. If the ball was over fair territory when it hit the BR, then BR is out. If the ball was over foul territory when it hit the BR, then it's a foul ball unless the BR intentionally deflected the ball in which case he is out.

This has nothing to do with his "basepath". He cannot make contact with a batted ball in fair territory. He has to avoid touching any fair ball while running. a runner establishes a basepath  when a fielder is making a play on the runner.

Ok the batter runner was hit in the head while running down to first base and he was in

Sorry about last post.

Runner was hit in the head while in fair territory? Is he out?

Runner was hit in the head while running down first base line but in foul territory. What is the call?

Runner was hit in the head while running down first base line but the ball is in foul territory. What is the call? Foul.

It's about where the ball is, not where the runner is.

This is a rather long thread for something I thought was pretty simple.  If the batter runner is hit in fair territory he is out.  If he is hit in foul territory we have a foul ball.  If he interferes with a fielder attempting to play the batted ball, he is out.

Is there more to this?

The only "more" is that getting hit by the ball is NOT interfering with the fielder.  Hard to imagine a situation in the OP, but take R3 leading off in foul territory (as he should).  Soft liner foul down the line.  R3 goes back to the bag, but is hit in the head by the ball (the ball is over foul territory).  F5 had moved over and (likely) would have made the catch had R3 not been hit.  Ruling:  Foul ball -- NOT INT.

Do you recognize that it's the position of the ball, not the runner, at the moment of contact that determines the outcome?

Yes. Yes I do.
