I have an update.  We had our association meeting last night and the PU from that game called after the meeting because he brought up both situations in his classroom session (we are in different clas

Had a couple of games yesterday and the second one had an evaluator there (didn't know he was there until after the game).  A couple of pieces of feedback:

 

1.  On the visitor's side, I noticed a fan carrying a sign that was about 2 feet by three feet and the name "Sean" took up the entire sign and the name was all filled in with glitter.  When the visitors were on defense, she was on the first base side right around the 45 foot line.  When they came to bat, she moved directly behind the backstop in F1's line of sight.  After a few pitches, F1 said that the sign was bugging him, and I agreed that it was very distracting.  I called time and asked her to either stop holding the sign there, or move out of the pitcher's line of sight.  She did and that was the end of it.  The evaluator said I had no right or business to ask her to do that.

 

2.  Batter strikes out and the pitch gets away from F2.  Since first base wasn't occupied, the BR ran to first and was thrown out by a couple of steps.  F3 is just starting to move into the infield and the BR shoves him a little bit.  It was unnecessary, but not malicious (which the evaluator agreed with).  I got the BR's attention and told him to knock it off.  1B coach agreed and told him not to do that.  The evaluator said that I should either eject, or say nothing because a redass coach might come out and complain that I am talking to his player.

 

Thoughts?

I was evaluated out here last year and told I was the most boring umpire in the state. Said I put him to sleep. When he said this to the coach the coach replied, " He may be boring, but he sure does like to call strikes." Also said I was called mushroom because I am a fungi.

Dont feel bad Stu. I keep getting that I am to "robotic". Especially when I am working the plate. When I ask what to do to not be thought of that way I get either "I dont know" or "just loosen up a bit" or some other useless junk.

It's kind ofmfrustrating when they want you to do something and when you ask them for their advice on how to do it, they cant help you.

Sounds like you had a terrific game, and your evaluator needed to find something to pick on. I think we've all had bosses like that also. Never can say great job...A;ways need to find something wrong. If that's all he had to say about your whole game.....Congrats..well done!! :beerbang  :clap:

 

 I actually had one who said "Pete, do you know you sweep the plate with your left hand ?"...... :no:

I agree, sounds like one of my wife's teacher evaluators that tell her "we aren't allowed to give perfect scores." if that is the only two things he could come up with sounds like you had a heck of a good game. Great job!

These weren't the only things he had for me - he had some helpful feedback as well. Just didn't agree with these two. He was very detail oriented - perhaps too much so for the PU. He looked a little overwhelmed by the end of the post game.

Do you use a point or hammer strike call?  A point and the footwork that goes with it might give you a little more athletic movement back then, if you're a hammer guy.  Just my .02

In pro ball would they move something distracting from behind the plate?

they can and they have.  Note that by "move" I don't mean go to the offender themselves but have game management do it.

Yup, I'm a hammer guy. Been one for for more then a decade with the exception of one season I tried to go back to the point. Went to it, the hammer that is, because getting out of my stance to do a point like I want to was bugging my knees.

That being said... I STILL got the "robotic" comment when I was doing the point. I think it is just me. Kind of feel like I need to talk to my parents. See if there is anything they havent told me.

I have an update.  We had our association meeting last night and the PU from that game called after the meeting because he brought up both situations in his classroom session (we are in different classes).  He said that both instructors, including a guy that works D1 ball in the Big West conference, said that I handled both situations properly.  @Magic also ran it by a couple of other umpires, including the association president, and they said they would give me bonus points, not criticize me, if they were the evaluators.  It's great to hear from some high level guys (locally, and guys here at U-E) that they think I did the right thing.  Since game management is the key to reach higher levels, it's important to me to get these things right.
