CP wise I have come down to two, the Wilson Charcoal and Champion. I've looked around this website and I haven't really found anything that would persuade me to get one or the other, so which one would be better? I'll be doing anywhere from 10-14 yr olds.

For my mask I've seen good thing about Team Wendy pads, but what kind of frame would be good to go with it? Sorry I'm really new to this.

Thanks

I have and wear both. The charcoal is a full step up. The padding is thicker and the plates more substantial. I bought mine used and have used it for 100 games a year for at least three years and absolutely love it. The champion is around half of the price and comes in 15 and 17 inch lengths if you care. I would not use the champion at the high school level. My strong rec is to get the charcoal and don't hesitate to look for a used one on eBay or Craigslist. I bet you can find one for 50 I feel very protected in the champion at the little league level and rec type big field stuff but still wear my charcoal most of the time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

For a beginner, I would get the Champion over the Wilson Charcoal. As far as a mask goes, The Wilson Dynalite is a great mask all-around, and it has a good price for someone starting out. You could get TW pads for it, up to you, but the stock wilson pads work just fine for 10-14 ball. There is a broad range of sufficient shin guards out there too.  Find gear in your price range and that you might like, then don't hesitate to come back to ask questions. Good luck.

@MRPorter

For chest protector - Wilson charcoal

Mask - for beginner I recommend Wilson Dyna-Lite with Team Wendy pads

Have you gotten shin guards yet?

I have a Wilson West Vest Gold thats retrofitted through Team Wendy. I've had/seen/tried many chest protectors in the past. I had the Champion and highly recommend it. It's low profile, hard shell, fits well. Nothing really against the Wilson charcoal, but it is very bulky and can fit awkward sometimes, depending on body type.

Get the Wilson. At the younger levels you will get hit more unless you jump out from behind the catcher a lot. ha  Don't cheat on protection.

Just go balls out and get a Douglas for your first protector or better yet if you can find a Riddell Power just grab one of those bad boys. You'll be the coolest umpire in town I promise you that.

Please do a search in the EQUIPMENT forum for whatever questions you have.  Trust me, there are TONS of threads on mask preferences, and CPs for the beginner ...........

what you'll find is this .....

buy the BEST you can, it's always the better way to go.  Even if yo don't like umpiring, you'll have some equipment to sell that is WORTH something and probably get most of your money back

Buy the best gear you can find. Do not skimp out.

Last nightat a Varsity game I took a foul ball directly to the chest.Thought my heart skipped a beat and lost my breath for a second. I was wearing my Wilson Gold. It didn't hurt but but felt the effects of getting hit that hard.

Had I been wearing an inferior CP I'd probably be in the Hospital.

Those that have some medical training will liken your experience to this:

The precordial thump is a medical procedure that may used by healthcare professionals, to respond to ventricular fibrillation orventricular tachycardia under certain conditions. The procedure is outside the scope of first-aid treatment and requires, at minimum, training in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The precordial thump may be considered in those with witnessed, monitored, unstable ventricular tachycardia (including pulseless VT) if a defibrillator is not immediately ready for use, but it should not delay CPR and shock delivery or be used in those with unwitnessed out of hospital arrest.

In a precordial thump, a provider strikes with a single blow of the fist to the middle of a persons sternum. The intent is to interrupt a potentially life-threatening rhythm. The thump is thought to produce an electrical depolarization of 2 to 5 joules. However, it is effective only if used near the onset of ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and so should be used only when the arrest is witnessed or monitored. There is no evidence that the precordial thump improves recovery in unwitnessed cardiac arrest.

A precordial thump may be attempted only once during the onset of cardiac arrest. While the odds of success are poor, if the procedure is performed properly then little time is lost. The provider will immediately continue with other ACLS skills, including CPR, ACLS drugs, and defibrillation, as appropriate.

There are concerns that the precordial thump can result in worsening of a person heart rhythm more often than it improves it.

The use of the precordial thump technique has sometimes been shown in movies and television, usually in passing without any explanation. Untrained laypersons have been known to attempt it, and sometimes cause additional injury to the patient as the blow must be carefully aimed. If applied incorrectly it may cause further injury, for instance inducing Commotio cordis (cardiac arrest caused by blunt trauma) or breaking the tip of the sternum.

At one time, the technique was also taught as part of standard CPR training with the requirement that it must be administered within 60 seconds of the onset of symptoms. That time restriction, combined with a number of injuries caused by improper technique, resulted in the procedure being removed from CPR training.

With that said, I hope everyone buys the best CP that they can afford.

There are a number of the original style Wilson West Vest protectors on ebay that have gone in the $70-80 range. For that price, I would recommend those instead of the charcoal Wilson. More protection and I don't think there is really much of a difference in protection between this old WV design and a current douglas.

Although TW pads are nice, I would recommend a newbie to purchase the Dyna Lite. Gerry Davis is also selling a Dyna Lite on special right now for $50. It would be most economical for this person to buy once and minimize shipping costs. The Honigs mask with TW pads is also very nice.

From all I've learned and read about over the years it's this. You can pay now buying quality gear, or you can pay later at your Dr' s office. Either way you will probably gravitate towards th  higher end gear in the long run. Just a matter of wasting money on co-pays, x-rays, MRI etc.. listen to these guys here. There's a wealth of knowledge that just may save you money, and some sore feelings to boot.
